{"id":719440,"date":"2019-10-09T10:08:38","date_gmt":"2019-10-09T10:08:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/10\/09\/gepa-to-build-capacity-of-small-cocoa-processors-to-increase-export-base\/"},"modified":"2019-10-09T10:08:38","modified_gmt":"2019-10-09T10:08:38","slug":"gepa-to-build-capacity-of-small-cocoa-processors-to-increase-export-base","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/10\/09\/gepa-to-build-capacity-of-small-cocoa-processors-to-increase-export-base\/","title":{"rendered":"GEPA to build capacity of small cocoa processors to increase export base"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-io-article-url=\"https:\/\/www.adomonline.com\/gepa-to-build-capacity-of-small-cocoa-processors-to-increase-export-base\/\">\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"464\" class=\"entry-thumb td-modal-image\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Nestle-promises-action-to-improve-women-s-lives-on-cocoa-farms_wrbm_large-696x464.jpg\"   alt=\"\" title=\"Nestle-promises-action-to-improve-women-s-lives-on-cocoa-farms_wrbm_large\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">File photo: Cocoa farmers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Deputy Chief Executive of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA), Albert Kassim Diwura, has said the Authority is set to provide capacity building for cocoa processors to maximise export base. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <strong>Adom News<\/strong> at the maiden edition of the African Cocoa and Chocolate Expo on the theme \u2018Celebrating Innovation and Motivating Consumption\u2019, Kassim Diwura said proper packaging should be adopted by processors to make their products attractive on the international market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dsometimes you may possess something of good quality but if you don\u2019t package it properly, nobody would even recognise it, so at GEPA, what we do is give the small and medium scale processors the training to build their capacity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Diwura said the aim of the Authority is to increase the amount Ghana realised from non-traditional cocoa export in 2018, hence the need to strengthen the capability of local stakeholders. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cCocoa constituted 27% of the over $2billion derived from non-traditional exports in 2018 and we believe the packaging we are giving to the processors will expose them to the world market to upsurge the amount,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>He further indicated the Authority has\u201crealised from the exhibition that, a lot of small startups have good products but poor packaging, so in order to make them export ready, we have to train those who are beginners reason being that if we don\u2019t increase the export base, we cannot increase the earnings\u201d, he averred.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the felling of cocoa trees to cultivate rubber, he advised farmers to secure alternative lands to cultivate any of the other five plants the president launched for the Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident<br \/>\nlaunched five plants for the PERD programme and we are not saying rubber is not<br \/>\ngood but you cannot cut down cocoa trees to plant all the other crops but seek<br \/>\nland from the numerous idle lands available in the country\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at the same event, a member of the Cocoa Consumption Committee of the Ghana Cocoa Board, Dr Edward Okyere Amporful said the measures are in place to put the larger percentage of the entire cocoa tree to use.
