THE US government
\nrecently engaged African ministers on the best ways to dramatically increase
\ntrade and investment within the continent.<\/p>\n

The high-level
\nbilateral meeting held on the sidelines of the just-ended UN General Assembly
\n(UNGA) was hosted by US Deputy Secretary, John Sullivan.<\/p>\n

Speaking with
\njournalists in a telephone briefing on recent events at UNGA, Assistant
\nSecretary of State for the Bureau of African Affairs, Tibor P. Nagy Jr., said participants
\nat the meeting talked about
\nthe new U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, the doubling of
\nfunding and also how to prosper Africa.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut what I was really excited about was to hear
\ndirectly from the African ministers as to what they are doing in their
\nenvironments to improve attraction for U.S. business people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Assistant Secretary of State expressed the strong
\nconviction that Africa needed U.S. businesses to bring the jobs that Africa\u2019s
\nyoung people wanted currently and in future, citing General Electric as a
\nclassic example. <\/p>\n

He said the projected growth in Africa\u2019s population
\nwhich was expected to double by 2050 represented a
\ntremendous opportunity for economic growth, prosperity and dynamism.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we need,
\nbasically, is to get out of the way of those young people, which means better
\ngovernance, better rules, better environments for business so that all those
\nbusinesses around the world that want to invest in Africa will come in and
\ninvest in Africa and create jobs for all of those millions of young people,\u201d Nagy
\nJr. said.<\/p>\n

The telephone
\nbriefing also touched on issues of international importance in Mali, the Sahel
\nand Sudan.<\/p>\n

However, Nagy Jr.
\nnoted that unfortunately the Sahel was one of the more problematic areas on the
\ncontinent with serious deterioration last year. \u201cSo the international community
\nis very engaged on trying to figure out a way on how to address that,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

He noted that the
\nentire international community was extremely excited about the positive
\ndevelopments in Sudan, especially how it could support Sudan to come out
\nsuccessfully. <\/p>\n
