The governments of Ghana
\nand the United Kingdom (UK) are keen on developing strategies to remove
\nbarriers that affect trade relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n

The decision was made at
\nthe third UK-Ghana Business meeting held at the Presidency (Jubilee House) in
\nAccra yesterday at the instance of Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.<\/p>\n

UK Parliamentary Under
\nSecretary of State at the Department for International Development (DFID),
\nBaroness Elizabeth Sugg, stressed her country\u2019s determination to remove all forms
\nof trade and investment barriers that exist between them and Ghana. <\/p>\n

Speaking under the theme: \u201cDelivering
\nMutual Prosperity\u201d, Baroness Sugg said both Ghana and the UK have a fine
\nopportunity to use the 3rd Council meeting to set the tone for improved trade
\nrelations between their two respective countries. <\/p>\n

She further indicated
\n\u201cas Ghana moves beyond aid, the UK is shifting its focus away from large-scale
\nresource transfer towards technical assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n

On his part, Vice-President
\nBawumia enumerated a number of initiatives government had and continued to roll
\nout all in an attempt to formalize the Ghanaian economy, particularly through
\ndigitalization modules such as the introduction of the digital addressing
\nsystem, the issuance of national biometric identity cards and mobile money
\ninteroperability.<\/p>\n

These efforts, he said,
\nhad set the stage for Ghana to engage the rest of the world for greater trade
\nand investment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith what we are doing,
\nwe expect that within the next two to three years in Ghana, we will have a
\ncompletely different public sector as far as the digitization and automation of
\nservices are concerned,\u201d Vice-President Bawumia said when he addressed the gathering.
\n\u201cWe should have a more efficient public sector and a less corrupt public
\nsector.\u201d<\/p>\n

The UK-Ghana Business
\nCouncil (UKGBC) is a biannual high-level meeting between top UK and Ghana
\ngovernment officials and ministers. <\/p>\n

The meeting is used as a
\nvehicle to move forward a new strategic economic partnership between the UK and
\nGhana that focuses on increased trade and investment and additionally
\nemphasizes the development of priority sectors of the Ghanaian economy that
\nleads to job creation and sustained economic growth. <\/p>\n

Together, the UK and Ghana governments have agreed on six priority sectors \u2014 agri-processing, financial services, textiles\/garments, pharma, digital and extractives \u2014 as the main areas of corporation between them.<\/p>\n
