MINERALS
\nCOMMISSION has launched its Alternative Livelihood Project (ALP) on Oil Palm to
\nthe Eastern Region with the distribution of 600,000 oil palm seedlings to
\ninterested beneficiaries including illegal miners.<\/p>\n

Launching the
\nproject at Akwatiakwa near Adawso in the Eastern Region, the Deputy Minister of
\nLands and Natural Resources, Benito Owusu-Bio, noted that, the APL on oil palm
\nhad become necessary, as it would help people living in mining communities with
\ntrade to improve upon their economic lives independent of mining. <\/p>\n

He emphasized that
\nthe project is also to ensure that mining communities do not become ghost towns
\neven after cessation of mining.<\/p>\n

Owusu-Bio informed
\nthe gathering that, the ministry has been working with Agencies under it to
\nensure that illegal mining is curbed in mining communities. Thus, the
\nimplementation of oil palm plantations to redirect the energies of the young
\nones engaged in the illegal mining menace; is one sure way of ensuring
\nsustainable livelihoods that will provide economic sustenance to members of
\nmining communities.<\/p>\n

The project
\ntargets the preparation of over 10,000 acres of oil palm plantation within the
\nproject catchment areas in the region. \u201cThese areas cover three administrative
\ndistricts in the region including: Denkyembour, Abuakwa North and New Abirem,
\nwhere mining takes place\u201d he indicated.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

On his part, the
\nCEO of the Minerals Commission, Mr. Addae Antwi-Boasiako noted that the commission considered the launching of its
\nflagship project on oil palm in the Eastern Region as timely, as will generate employment both direct and indirect through
\nthe establishment of agro based industries, which private investors have
\nalready positioned themselves under government\u2019s flagship, \u2018One District One
\nFactory\u2019, to use the oil palm produce as a feed stock .<\/p>\n

He disclosed that
\ntill date, over 2,339 beneficiaries had been registered to participate in the
\nprogramme within 25 mining communities from the three Administrative Districts
\nin the Eastern Region. <\/p>\n

\nChairman of the Minerals Commission, S.K. Boafo in his address, urged the youth
\nto stop the illegal mining practice (galamsey) and
\ninstead, register and adopt the project as a more lucrative and less hazardous
\nmeans of livelihood. <\/p>\n
