{"id":716306,"date":"2019-10-04T10:44:42","date_gmt":"2019-10-04T10:44:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/10\/04\/ndc-exposed-in-sex-education-saga\/"},"modified":"2019-10-04T10:44:42","modified_gmt":"2019-10-04T10:44:42","slug":"ndc-exposed-in-sex-education-saga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/10\/04\/ndc-exposed-in-sex-education-saga\/","title":{"rendered":"NDC Exposed In Sex Education Saga"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang \u2013 Former Education Minister<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It<br \/>\nis turning out that the Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) appeared to<br \/>\nhave been found in the curriculum for basic schools was introduced by the<br \/>\nprevious National Democratic Congress (NDC) government in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nCSE issue has sparked heated debate in the country after it met stiff<br \/>\nopposition from religious bodies in particular.<\/p>\n<p>CSE<br \/>\nis to integrate gender, human values and sexual and reproductive health rights<br \/>\nperspectives into sexuality education in the country. Through CSE, it was anticipated<br \/>\nthat at age six, Primary One pupils would be introduced to values and societal<br \/>\nnorms, and how to interact with the different sexes and groups.<\/p>\n<p>In<br \/>\nthe ensuing heat, the Minister of Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, at a<br \/>\npress conference, debunked the claims that the Ghana Education Service (GES)<br \/>\nhad approved the controversial sex education course at basic school level.<\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nsaid neither the government nor education authorities had given the go-ahead<br \/>\nfor the introduction of the CSE as part of the curriculum to be used in basic<br \/>\nschools in the next academic year.<\/p>\n<p>According<br \/>\nto him, \u201cthe so-called Comprehensive Sexuality Education is not part of the<br \/>\napproved curriculum for usage for KG to Basic 6.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As<br \/>\nusual, the NDC has tried to take advantage of the issue, with former President<br \/>\nJohn Mahama leading the charge and attacking the government for the initiative.<\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nsaid the government should withdraw the CSE with immediate effect but it turned<br \/>\nout it was during his tenure that the CSE was first introduced.<\/p>\n<p>A<br \/>\nSpokesperson at the Ministry of Education, Vincent Ekow Asafuah, countered the<br \/>\nNDC propaganda on the issue by revealing that a CSE document was published<br \/>\nbefore the NPP assumed power in January 2017.<\/p>\n<p>According<br \/>\nto him, the material was meant to serve as a source document for teachers on<br \/>\nthe CSE programme.<\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\n2015 document was signed by then Director-General of Ghana Education Service,<br \/>\nMr. Jacob Aworb-Nang Maabobr Kor, under then Minister of Education, Prof. Jane<br \/>\nNaana Opoku Agyemang.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a former Deputy<br \/>\nMinister of Education under the Mahama administration, even claimed that the<br \/>\ngovernment of Sweden had already committed $22 million to Ghana and the other<br \/>\nfive countries towards the acceleration of the CSE<br \/>\ninitiative.<\/p>\n<p>He claimed that \u201cone of the key deliverables upon which our government<br \/>\nreceived the first tranche of money is a promise to \u2018overcome social resistance<br \/>\nand operational constraints\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>No Money<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a<br \/>\nrebuttal, Chairman of the GES Council, Michael <em>Nsowah, challenged the<br \/>\nclaim by Okudzeto Ablakwa that the Swedish government had committed some $22 million<br \/>\ninto the CSE programme. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>According to Mr. Nsowah, the processes towards the<br \/>\nsigning of the CSE started by the NDC government when he (Okudzeto Ablakwa) was<br \/>\na deputy minister of education and has urged him to show where the said money<br \/>\ncan be located.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He denied knowledge of any said amount paid by the Swedish government.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>By Nana Kwasi<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang \u2013 Former Education Minister It is turning out that the Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) appeared to have been found in the curriculum for basic schools was introduced by the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government in 2015.
