{"id":715038,"date":"2019-10-02T17:28:45","date_gmt":"2019-10-02T17:28:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/10\/02\/hajia-alima-seeks-media-support-for-referendum\/"},"modified":"2019-10-02T17:28:45","modified_gmt":"2019-10-02T17:28:45","slug":"hajia-alima-seeks-media-support-for-referendum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/10\/02\/hajia-alima-seeks-media-support-for-referendum\/","title":{"rendered":"Hajia Alima Seeks Media Support For Referendum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Hajia Alima Mahama <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nMinister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hajia Alima Mahama, has<br \/>\nencouraged senior media practitioners to champion the education of the public<br \/>\non the amendment of some provisions of the 1992 constitution, notably Article<br \/>\n55 (3) and Article 243 (1).<\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\namendment of Article 243 (1) will allow for the election of Metropolitan<br \/>\nMunicipal and Districts Chief Executives (MMDCEs) through universal adult<br \/>\nsuffrage instead of the current situation where the president appoints people<br \/>\ninto that position.<\/p>\n<p>While<br \/>\nthe amendment of the entrenched clause, Article 55 (3) (through a referendum,<br \/>\nin line with the provision of Article 290) will see the introduction of multiparty<br \/>\nsystem at the district level elections.<\/p>\n<p>Hajia Mahama, opening a day\u2019s meeting with news editors in Accra, said it was important for the two institutions to collaborate and promote the understanding of the processes involved in the referendum set for December, 17, 2019.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/media.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-247886\"  \/><figcaption><strong>The news editors at the forum<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe<br \/>\nstrongly believe that collaboration between the Ministry and your media houses<br \/>\nwill promote understanding of the process involved and yield substantial<br \/>\nbenefit towards deepening decentralization and enhancing citizen participation<br \/>\nin local government,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She<br \/>\nsaid in line with deepening decentralization and fulfillment of the desire of<br \/>\nthe populace to elect MMDCEs, government initiated processes to amend certain<br \/>\nprovisions of the constitution considered as obstacles to the attainment of<br \/>\nparticipation in local government elections in Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>Hajia<br \/>\nMahama said the amendment of Article 243 (1) bill had gone through all required<br \/>\nsteps and was now in Parliament, adding that the sub-committee on<br \/>\nConstitutional, Legal and Parliament Affairs of the house, at its meeting on<br \/>\nthe bill reached a consensus for its passage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOutstanding<br \/>\nmatter in Parliament now is the vote on the bill.
