{"id":714921,"date":"2019-10-02T14:46:31","date_gmt":"2019-10-02T14:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/10\/02\/govt-urged-to-establish-more-cath-labs\/"},"modified":"2019-10-02T14:46:31","modified_gmt":"2019-10-02T14:46:31","slug":"govt-urged-to-establish-more-cath-labs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/10\/02\/govt-urged-to-establish-more-cath-labs\/","title":{"rendered":"Gov\u2019t Urged to Establish More Cath Labs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>A section of the audience at the lecture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A<br \/>\nConsultant Physician and Cardiologist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH),<br \/>\nDr. Alfred Doku, has called for the establishment of additional catheterization<br \/>\nlaboratories (cath labs) in the country to ensure the effective diagnosis and management<br \/>\nof cardiovascular diseases, especially heart attack.<\/p>\n<p>According<br \/>\nto Dr. Doku, the three cath labs \u2013 an examination room in a hospital or clinic<br \/>\nwith diagnostic imaging equipment used to visualize the arteries of the heart<br \/>\nand the chambers of the heart and treat any stenosis or abnormality found \u2013 are<br \/>\ninadequate for the effective diagnosis and treatment of<br \/>\nheart attack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe<br \/>\nwant government to at least establish a cath lab in each region so we also have<br \/>\n\u2018one region, one cath lab\u2019,\u201d he stressed. <\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nwas speaking at the 4<sup>th<\/sup> Biennial Public Lecture on the theme: \u201cHeart<br \/>\nAttack: An Emerging Disease We Cannot Ignore\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>It<br \/>\nwas organized by the College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana in Accra.<\/p>\n<p>Making<br \/>\na presentation on the clinical management of heart attack in the country, Dr.<br \/>\nDoku raised issues with the poor position of the Ghanaian society and health<br \/>\nsystem to care for people with heart attack which is the leading cause of death<br \/>\nworldwide.<\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nsaid there was low public knowledge of cardiac arrest and resuscitation, no<br \/>\ndefibrillators at public places, and electrocardiography machines at the lower<br \/>\nand middle health facilities level, adding \u201cour emergency response team is also<br \/>\nnot easily available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr.<br \/>\nDoku, therefore, stressed the need for intensified public education on the<br \/>\nsymptoms and signs of a heart attack.<\/p>\n<p>Dr.<br \/>\nYacoba Atiase, Lecturer at the University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS),<br \/>\nspeaking on the risk factors of heart attack, said 50 per cent of heart attack<br \/>\ndeaths occurred in the first one hour of the attack. <\/p>\n<p>She<br \/>\nsaid high cholesterol contributes to plague formation which increases the risk<br \/>\nof heart attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Avoid<br \/>\ntrans fat like biscuits, cookies doughnuts and limit unhealthy fats and saturated<br \/>\nfats in beef lamb.
