Otumfuo Osei Tutu II <\/strong><\/p>\n

A
\nTOTAL of 600,000 brilliant but needy students have benefited from the Otumfuo
\nEducation Fund since the inception of the social intervention policy two
\ndecades ago.<\/p>\n

The
\nAsantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, introduced the initiative immediately he
\nascended onto the Golden Stool of Asanteman as a way of complementing
\ngovernment\u2019s efforts towards helping Ghanaian students to realise their
\nacademic goals.<\/p>\n

Addressing
\nthe United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York, United States, recently,
\nthe Asantehene said the purpose for setting up the education fund had been
\nachieved so far.<\/p>\n

\u201cMore
\nthan 600,000 students, who, due to financial constraints and other challenges,
\ncould have been dropped out of school, have benefited from the Otumfuo
\nEducation Fund in Ghana now,\u201d he said, adding \u201cthis social intervention
\nprogramme, which I decided to set up after being enstooled as the King of the
\nAsantes, one of the respected and powerful kingdoms in Africa, continues to
\nsupport needy students,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The
\nAsantehene explained that the Otumfuo Education Fund doesn\u2019t cover only
\nAsantes, and reiterated that he set up the fund purposely to help brilliant but
\nneedy Ghanaian students, irrespective of their ethnic background.<\/p>\n

He
\nsaid he was pleased with the huge impact that the Otumfuo Education Fund was
\nmaking in the lives of Ghanaian youth. He disclosed that the initiative had
\nchurned out medical doctors, pharmacists, teachers and other professionals.<\/p>\n

Emphasis On Education <\/strong><\/p>\n

The
\nAsantehene stated emphatically that education is the only tool to a successful
\nlife in modern times. He promised to continue to support education to flourish
\nin Ghana.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe
\ngreatest potential to the success of every state lies on education,\u201d the Asante
\nMonarch emphasized, adding \u201cthat is why I set up the Otumfuo Education Fund to
\nprovide opportunities for quality primary to university education.\u201d<\/p>\n

Teachers\u2019 Awards <\/strong><\/p>\n

The
\nOtumfuo also stated that teachers remained a key component if education would
\nflourish, hence his decision to also introduce Teachers\u2019 Awards scheme to help
\nmotivate teachers to work hard, especially those in the rural areas.<\/p>\n

According
\nto him, he would continue to use his time, energy and resources to motivate
\nteachers so that they would accept postings to the rural areas for children to
\nreceive the needed education.<\/p>\n

The
\nAsantehene was invited to the UN General Assembly to share with the world how
\nhe had been able to combine modernity and tradition to lead the Asante Kingdom,
\nand how his influence is helping to promote Ghana\u2019s democracy.<\/p>\n

Among
\nOtumfuo\u2019s delegation were Nana Otuo Serebuo, the Juabenhene and Chairman of the
\nCouncil of State, Oheneba Owusu Afriyie, the Apagyahene, and other traditional
\nleaders from Asanteman.<\/p>\n
