{"id":714013,"date":"2019-10-01T12:38:29","date_gmt":"2019-10-01T12:38:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/10\/01\/pbc-trains-cocoa-farmers\/"},"modified":"2019-10-01T12:38:29","modified_gmt":"2019-10-01T12:38:29","slug":"pbc-trains-cocoa-farmers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/10\/01\/pbc-trains-cocoa-farmers\/","title":{"rendered":"PBC Trains Cocoa Farmers &#8211;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Samuel Amissah, Project Development Manager<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Produce Buying Company (PBC) Limited has<br \/>\norganised training for cocoa farmers at Esiama in the Western Region to educate<br \/>\nthem on good agricultural practices to help increase yield.<\/p>\n<p>The farmers were taken through<br \/>\nIntegrated Pest Management, Good Environmental Practices, Post Harvest<br \/>\nManagement as well as Forest Protection and Restoration.<\/p>\n<p>The essence of the training was among<br \/>\nother things to help the cocoa farmers know how and when to apply fertilizers<br \/>\nand other chemicals on their farms to help them produce cocoa on sustainable<br \/>\nbasis and to obtain higher yield.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative was also to help the<br \/>\nfarmers increase their income and improve their living standards.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to journalists during the training<br \/>\nprogramme, Alfred Ofori Annye, Deputy Chief Executive<br \/>\nOfficer (CEO) of PBC in charge of Operations, noted that the cocoa farmers were<br \/>\nalso made to understand the importance of protecting the forest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only the forest but the<br \/>\nenvironment also to help combat climate change which had adverse effects on<br \/>\nfarming activities,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>He used the occasion to debunk the<br \/>\nperception by some people that PBC had collapsed and assured the cocoa farmers<br \/>\nthat the company had the requisite resources to purchase their produce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPBC has had some financial challenges<br \/>\nfor the past five years, but the current government has provided the financial<br \/>\nsupport to PBC to purchase cocoa this October\u201d, he pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that \u201cthe necessary documents<br \/>\nare being processed in anticipation of government\u2019s financial support in the<br \/>\nfirst week of October, 2019 to purchase cocoa. Let me assure the cocoa farmers<br \/>\nagain that PBC is going to purchase cocoa this October\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He also appealed to the cocoa farmers to<br \/>\ntake advantage of the government\u2019s initiatives such as mass cocoa spraying,<br \/>\npruning and the cutting down of all swollen shoot affected cocoa trees, to<br \/>\nprevent the spread of the viral disease.<\/p>\n<p>Samuel Amissah, Project Development<br \/>\nManager at the Inputs Certification Unit of PBC, indicated that cocoa farmers<br \/>\nused to harvest about 16 or 20 bags on one acre farm but unfortunately they are<br \/>\ncurrently harvesting less than 10 bags.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the training will be carried out in<br \/>\nall the cocoa producing districts nationwide to assist the farmers with the<br \/>\nrequisite knowledge to help them increase production\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>From Emmanuel Opoku, Takoradi <\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Samuel Amissah, Project Development Manager Produce Buying Company (PBC) Limited has organised training for cocoa farmers at Esiama in the Western Region to educate them on good agricultural practices to help increase yield.
