The Special Prosecutor has disclosed that the Attorney General wanted to pass a Legislative Instrument (LI) that would have made him what he describes as a \u201clame-duck\u201d.<\/p>\n
Martin Alamisi Amidu said had he not intervened and insisted, the Special Prosecutor\u2019s Office would have existed just in name.<\/p>\n
In an interview with David Ampofo on the Time With David talk show, he said, \u201cI had a lot of confrontations with the Attorney General about the way they wanted to set up the Office.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey wanted to set up the Office as a lame-duck which I resisted. There are exchanges of letters which proves it but eventually I got LIs which allowed us work,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Almost shortly after assuming office in 2017, President Nana Akufo-Addo appointed Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor, in fulfilment of a campaign message to fight corruption.<\/p>\n
This brought much delight to many Ghanaians who had grown despondent with the many corruption cases that had plagued the country.<\/p>\n
But that joy has been dampened by Mr Amidu\u2019s inability to, as at yet, prosecute any person or persons involved in corrupt acts although there have been many cases.
But the former Attorney General in the J. E. A. Mills administration says that is not his fault.<\/p>\n
The astute lawyer popularly known as \u2018Citizen vigilante\u2019 said his Office lacks the requisite resources, including personnel which will enable him to embark on a fight that brings the kind of results Ghanaians want.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn my three-bedroom house [Special Prosecutor\u2019s Office], we have only one private secretary for my deputy, the secretary, accountant and for three investigators. How do you expect one secretary to do that [carry out her duties as expected]?<\/p>\n
\u201cThe reason why we have not engaged [many hands] is by sheer lack of physical space. So who thought of putting that Office in such a small space,\u201d he queried.<\/p>\n
He said although President Akufo-Addo seems bent on fighting corruption, the people around him have been unhelpful to the course.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe President is a busy man, he works through so you don\u2019t expect him to get up every day and say \u2018what is happening\u2019. If those officers are not helping the OSP, definitely the Special Prosecutor cannot do his job,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
