\nmore persons have been remanded in custody by a Kaneshie District Court in
\nAccra for their involvement in plans to attack the Presidency and destabilize
\nthe country.<\/p>\n
The accused persons\u2014a senior military officer, Col. Samuel Kojo Gameli,
\nand a civilian employee of the Ghana Armed Forces, Gershon Akpa\u2014are
\nalleged to be neck-deep in the activities of the group of individuals arrested
\nfor allegedly stockpiling weapons and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) at
\nthe Citadel Hospital at Alajo in Accra.<\/p>\n
The two, according to the Bureau of National Investigations
\n(BNI), are members of Take Action Ghana (TAG)\u2014a Non-Government Civil Society Organisation
\noperated by Dr. Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, who is alleged to be the mastermind
\nbehind the plans to destabilize the country.<\/p>\n
Their
\narrests bring to five the number of persons who have been remanded in the
\ncustody of the BNI since the government raided the Citadel Hospital at Alajo
\nlast Friday over the alleged coup plot.<\/p>\n
Three other suspects\u2014including the proprietor of the medical facility,
\nDr. Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, and two others, Ezor Kafui, a local weapon
\nmanufacturer (blacksmith), as well as Bright Allan Debrah Ofosu, aka BB or ADC\u2014were last
\nTuesday remanded by the court presided over by Rosemond Agyiri.<\/p>\n
Charges<\/strong><\/p>\nThe three persons accused earlier are facing a total of five
\ncharges\u2014all in
\nconnection with the deadly explosives and ammunition they were caught with.<\/p>\n
The three\u2014including
\none suspect only identified as Suley\u2014are facing two counts of conspiracy to manufacture
\narms and ammunition, as well as the unlawful possession of explosives and
\nfirearms.<\/p>\n
On the
\nother hand, the colonel and the civilian employee are also facing one count each
\nof possession of explosives, firearms and ammunition without excuse.<\/p>\n
Role<\/strong><\/p>\nThe
\nprosecution, led by ASP Sylvester Asare, told the court that Col. Gameli and
\nMr. Akpa are members of TAG who were planning to embark on a demonstration
\nagainst government. <\/p>\n
Part of
\ntheir planned demonstration was to attack the Presidency and destabilize the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
TAG allegedly hired Donya Kafui \u2014a
\nblacksmith from the Volta Region\u2014to manufacture guns and explosives for them to
\nuse for their intended demonstration.<\/p>\n
The
\nblacksmith is said to have charged GH\u00a22,300 for each pistol and GH\u00a2400 for each
\nexplosive and his contractors agreed to his terms of service.<\/p>\n
Donya Kafui
\nis said to have been brought to Accra by his contractors and was lodged at
\nCitadel Hospital.<\/p>\n
He then
\nhanded over 22 explosives, six (6) pistols, three (3) hand grenades and five
\n(5) pieces of ammunition to the leadership of TAG.<\/p>\n
ASP
\nAsare said investigations led to the arrests of the alleged coup plotters,
\nincluding the senior military officer.<\/p>\n
No Pleas<\/strong><\/p>\nThe
\npleas of the accused persons were not taken because the charges relate to a
\ntrial by indictment and the District Court does not have jurisdiction to
\nconvict or sentence the accused persons on those charges.
\nNeither of the two accused persons was represented by a lawyer when they appeared
\nin court yesterday.<\/p>\n
Police Request<\/strong><\/p>\nThe
\nprosecuting officer, ASP Asare, urged the court to remand the two as the case
\nwas still under investigation and assured the court that the BNI would open its
\ndoors at all times to lawyers and relations of the accused persons in
\npreparation for their defence.<\/p>\n
Remand <\/strong><\/p>\nThe two have been remanded to reappear on October 9 and the judge has asked the BNI officials to allow the accused persons access to their lawyers and relatives, asking the suspects to report to her if they were denied those privileges. <\/p>\n
