{"id":711459,"date":"2019-09-27T11:13:53","date_gmt":"2019-09-27T11:13:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/09\/27\/were-with-you-buhari-assures-ghana\/"},"modified":"2019-09-27T11:13:53","modified_gmt":"2019-09-27T11:13:53","slug":"were-with-you-buhari-assures-ghana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/09\/27\/were-with-you-buhari-assures-ghana\/","title":{"rendered":"We\u2019re With You &#8211; Buhari Assures Ghana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>President Nana Akufo-Addo with Nigeria\u2019s President Muhammadu Buhari  <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nigeria\u2019s<br \/>\nPresident Muhammadu Buhari has showered plaudits on Ghana\u2014a country he said \u201cis the first, true African<br \/>\ndemocracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nNigerian strongman\u2019s social media tweet, coming against the backdrop of the recent<br \/>\nstatement from the Information Minister about the arrest of persons suspected<br \/>\nto be planning a coup, could be a subtle show of solidarity with his Ghanaian<br \/>\ncounterpart and the people of this country. <\/p>\n<p>Ghanaians<br \/>\ncan count on the unflinching support and friendship of Nigeria\u2014the retired General and now President assured<br \/>\nhis Ghanaian counterpart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe<br \/>\nin Nigeria hold out\u2014as always\u2014our hands in<br \/>\nsupport and friendship to our brothers and sisters in Ghana,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nNigerian President flaunted Ghana\u2019s pedigree in the tweet when he stated how<br \/>\nthe country is held in the highest esteem especially pointing at its record of<br \/>\nbeing the first post-colonial country in Africa to gain independence, and as he<br \/>\nposted \u201cthe first African country to hold multi-party elections by universal<br \/>\nsuffrage. Ghana is the first, true African democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\ncarefully crafted tweet touched on the roles of the two countries in the cause<br \/>\nof the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), not forgetting the<br \/>\npartnership they have forged since the establishment of the bloc. <\/p>\n<p>President<br \/>\nBuhari did not forget to refer to the progress the two countries have chalked<br \/>\nup in the fight against corruption, socio-economic canker afflicting both of<br \/>\nthem. The progress, he said, is attested to by the recent Transparency<br \/>\nInternational and Afro Barometer\u2019s Africa Index \u201cwhich have recorded<br \/>\nexceptional advances in fighting corruption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still<br \/>\non corruption, President Buhari explained how fighting it is fraught with<br \/>\nchallenges because, as he observed, such duels are against powerful and corrupt<br \/>\nvested interests. Such interests, he noted, would sometimes seek to \u201cpush back\u201d<br \/>\nbecause of the success in the fight against them. He embellished his point with<br \/>\nthe saying that \u201cif you fight corruption, corruption will fight back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ghana<br \/>\nand Nigeria, as President Buhari noted in his tweet, are leading pillars in<br \/>\nECOWAS where their roles have been phenomenal as evidenced in the deployment of<br \/>\ntroops to Liberia during that country\u2019s civil war. <\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nvolume of trade between them\u2014formal and informal\u2014 is also heavy. <\/p>\n<p>Although<br \/>\nthere have been occasional misunderstandings between the two countries, these<br \/>\nhave mostly been outside diplomacy.<\/p>\n<p>The long-standing bond of<br \/>\nfriendship between them has resulted in one of the widely spoken languages in<br \/>\nNigeria\u2014Hausa\u2014gaining a<br \/>\nfoothold in Ghana, where today it is a recognized local tongue coming next<br \/>\nafter English and Akan.<\/p>\n<p>President Buhari was schooled with Hausa like the late Alhaji Ibrahim Coomasie\u2014a former IGP of Nigeria whose ancestors migrated to the then Gold Coast and had already been finely assimilated through intermarriages.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>By A.R.
