An Isreali woman was hospitalised with so-called\u00a0\u201cbroken heart syndrome\u201d after mistaking wasabi for avocado, according to a report recently detailed in a medical journal.<\/p>\n

The unusual story begins with a woman in her late 60s who attended a wedding.<\/p>\n

At the nuptials, the woman, who was not identified in the report published in\u00a0BMJ Case Reports, ate a \u201clarge amount\u201d of what she thought was avocado dip \u2014 only to very quickly realize it was actually wasabi paste, a\u00a0Japanese horseradish.<\/p>\n

The woman then felt a \u201csudden pressure\u201d in her chest\u00a0before the feeling moved down to her arms,\u00a0according to IFL Science,\u00a0which cited the report.<\/p>\n

The sensation lasted for the next few hours, though the woman chose to stay at the wedding.<\/p>\n

By the next morning, however, she awoke feeling \u201cuncomfortable and weak\u201d and decided to see a doctor, reported\u00a0IFL Science.<\/p>\n

Doctors performed an electrocardiogram (ECG), which revealed the woman was suffering from\u00a0takotsubo cardiomyopathy, colloquially known as\u00a0\u201cbroken heart syndrome.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Mayo Clinic\u00a0defines the condition\u00a0as a \u201ctemporary disruption of [the] heart\u2019s normal pumping function in one area of the heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s typically triggered by extreme emotional or physical stress, such as the death of a loved one or a car accident. Most people who experience broken heart syndrome are 50 years old or older.<\/p>\n

In the report, the researchers claim the woman\u2019s broken heart syndrome case is the first to be spurred by \u201cfood consumption alone,\u201d IFL Science reports.<\/p>\n

In the past, other food-related cases of broken heart syndrome\u00a0were linked to anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of takotsubo cardiomyopathy triggered by wasabi consumption,\u201d the researchers wrote, according to IFL Science, which added the woman recovered after she was treated with angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and beta-blockers.<\/p>\n
