Dr. Mustapha Hamid <\/strong><\/p>\nThe Minister of Inner Cities and Zongo
\nDevelopment, Dr. Mustapha Hamid, has disclosed that his decision to enter
\npolitics was motivated by a strong desire of reuniting with his father who had
\ngone into exile under the regime of former President Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings
\nin the 1980s.<\/p>\n
He explained that the only way his father, who
\nwas an ex-service man and had not been seen by his family for 18 years, could
\nreturn to the country was through a change of the Rawlings government.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy father was accused of trying to overthrow
\nthe military government so he had to flee the country. So in 1991 when the ban
\non multiparty politics was lifted, I decided to join politics in order to
\nspecifically campaign against the authoritarian NDC government so my father
\ncould return home,\u201d he revealed.<\/p>\n
The minister made the revelation when he interacted
\nwith girls from some basic schools in Accra on Thursday.<\/p>\n
The girls were beneficiaries of a mentorship
\nprogramme dubbed: \u201cZongo Girls Arise Project\u201d held under the theme:
\n\u201cSelf Discovery\u201d. <\/p>\n
Dr Hamid urged the girls to nurture bigger
\naspirations in life irrespective of their social or educational backgrounds, as
\nattaining greater heights in life was more dependent on dedication, discipline
\nand hard work.<\/p>\n
The Board Chairman of the National Youth
\nEmployment Agency (YEA), Sammi Awuku, for his part, disclosed that he developed interest in politics at a tender age. He would buy
\nnewspapers while in primary school and would never miss a chance to see former President
\nRawlings whenever he visited Koforidua.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven though I was born into an opposition
\nfamily at that time and my grandparents did not want to hear anything about Mr.
\nRawlings, I had a personal liking for him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In spite of studying Agric Science at the
\nsenior high school level, Mr. Awuku said that he continued to draw inspiration
\nfrom political activists like Martin Luther King, among others.<\/p>\n
He said the inspirations led him to transition
\nfrom campaigner to a spokesperson, then to an aspiring Student Representative
\nCouncil (SRC) president as a tertiary student who would later in life become a
\nNational Organiser of the New Patriotic Party.<\/p>\n
The Project Coordinator, Humu Gaage, encouraged
\nthe girls to be bold enough to face socio-cultural obstacles that may hinder
\ntheir career aspirations.<\/p>\n
She mentioned some of the obstacles as pressure
\nfrom relatives to pursue certain courses, enticement into early marriage and
\nteenage pregnancy.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t let anybody force you into doing
\nsomething you know you cannot do. If you are good at sewing take it seriously,\u201d
\nshe said.<\/p>\n
Some schools that participated in the programme
\nwere Al Waleed Basic School, Al Hijra School, Bethany Preparatory School, among
\nothers.<\/p>\n
