DAN ACHEAMPONG, president
\nof the Ghana Employers Association (GEA), has asked government to cut tariffs
\non non-domestic electricity consumption, to help boost industry. <\/p>\n

Mr Acheampong, who
\nwas speaking Wednesday in Accra at the 59th<\/sup> Annual General Meeting (AGM)
\nof his outfit, said Ghana still remained comparatively high on the price index
\nfor electricity tariffs in West Africa.<\/p>\n

He appealed to government
\nto speed up the rate of developing other cost-effective forms of renewable
\nenergy supply to promote business growth, since these were cheap in the medium
\nto long term and also environmentally-friendly. <\/p>\n

He said that would
\nkeep investors who are already operating in Ghana, and appealing to new local
\nand foreign investors.<\/p>\n

According to Mr
\nAcheampong, another main problem that obstructed business growth and its
\nsustainability was counterfeiting and illicit trade, which pushed long term
\nnegative repercussions on local brands and their income.<\/p>\n

The GEA president
\nadded that another issue of concern was that the manufacturing sector, which
\nrepresented a significant bunch of Ghana\u2019s real sector, was becoming less
\ncompetitive partly as a result of illicit and counterfeit trading activities.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs an association,
\nwe respectfully request that government provides the regulatory agencies with
\nthe requisite resources to strengthen their efforts in combating counterfeit
\nand illicit trade in the country,\u201d Mr Acheampong said.<\/p>\n

In a speech,
\nIbrahim Mohammed Awal, Minister for Business Development, said to help the
\ngrowth of businesses in the country, government was working seriously to reduce
\nthe cost of borrowing.<\/p>\n

Employment and
\nLabour Relations Minister, Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, commended the GEA and Organised
\nLabour for the peaceful industrial harmony Ghana was enjoying.<\/p>\n

He called on employers
\nto ensure that they paid their workers\u2019 social security contributions, as well
\nas their tier two pension contributions, since both were obligatory.<\/p>\n

Noting that his ministry will continue to support businesses with the required finance to create jobs and employ more people; he advised employers to allow their workers to register with labour unions and also enjoy parenthood leave.<\/p>\n
