{"id":704895,"date":"2019-09-13T12:51:24","date_gmt":"2019-09-13T12:51:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/09\/13\/soldiers-police-sweep-buduburam\/"},"modified":"2019-09-13T12:51:24","modified_gmt":"2019-09-13T12:51:24","slug":"soldiers-police-sweep-buduburam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/09\/13\/soldiers-police-sweep-buduburam\/","title":{"rendered":"Soldiers, Police Sweep Buduburam &#8211;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Some of the suspects being rounded up during the joint operation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of soldiers and police<br \/>\nofficers yesterday undertook a dawn operation at Budumburam in the Central<br \/>\nRegion, specifically descending on the Liberian Refugee Camp to rid the area of<br \/>\nsuspected criminals. <\/p>\n<p>The joint operation is a<br \/>\nglaring response of the national security apparatus to the recent murder of two<br \/>\npolice officers as well as the gruesome killing of a chief at Akranman recently,<br \/>\nand the subsequent public outcry about how the area is now a haven for<br \/>\ncriminals of all sorts. <\/p>\n<p>Four hundred (400) soldiers and<br \/>\n200 police officers armed in battle order were engaged in the operation which<br \/>\nwon the applause of law-abiding residents who have been yearning for such an<br \/>\noperation. <\/p>\n<p>There was nowhere to hide as 50<br \/>\nvehicles including armoured cars and security personnel directed their<br \/>\nattention on an assortment of criminals within the area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key<br \/>\nResult <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Later, a statement from the<br \/>\nPolice Public Affairs Directorate on the subject described the operation as \u201ca<br \/>\nspecial exercise which is part of efforts to ensure total security in the<br \/>\ncountry.\u201d Continuing, the statement said \u201cthe security agents are taking the<br \/>\nfight to the doorstep of criminals\u201d explaining that measures such as \u201ccordon<br \/>\nand search, swoops, intelligence-led operations, among others\u201d shall be<br \/>\nemployed.<\/p>\n<p>On the achievement of the<br \/>\nexercise, the police stated that \u201ca total of 141 suspects including 15 females<br \/>\nwere rounded up during the operation and were all brought to the Police<br \/>\nNational Headquarters for screening. Those found culpable shall be taken<br \/>\nthrough the legal process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The police have solicited for<br \/>\nvital information in what they said would be a nationwide exercise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pure<br \/>\nExcitement<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An excited resident who<br \/>\nwitnessed the operation and the success it chalked up could not hide his<br \/>\nsentiment as he gave plaudits to the security personnel. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are happy that this swoop<br \/>\nhas taken place. The place is fraught with criminals and it is making it unsafe<br \/>\nto live here. If police and military do this exercise every week, we shall be<br \/>\nhappy,\u201d he said, adding that he was unhappy that the criminals in the area had<br \/>\ngiven law-abiding residents a negative tag.<\/p>\n<p>He said the few miscreants deal<br \/>\nin drugs, fraud, robbery, prostitution and all sorts of criminal activities,<br \/>\nadding \u201cyou can\u2019t move at night especially at dawn. You will be robbed at<br \/>\ngunpoint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chief<br \/>\nCries Out<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In his reaction to the murder<br \/>\nof the two police officers, the Chief<br \/>\nof Gomoa Budumburam, Nana Kojo Essel II, recently expressed worry about the<br \/>\npoor state of security in the area. <br \/>The segment of the area allocated for refugees from Liberia, he said, is now a<br \/>\nhaven for criminals.<\/p>\n<p>He said it had<br \/>\nbecome a daily ritual for him to bury dead bodies with their parts lost adding<br \/>\nthat there was a self-imposed curfew in the area at dusk because residents fear<br \/>\nbeing attacked by criminals. <br \/>\u201cI have to bury dead bodies abandoned in the<br \/>\narea. Most of the corpses have missing body parts; obviously they used them for<br \/>\nritual purposes.<br \/>The police are even afraid to go there because<br \/>\nthese armed robbers, mostly Ghanaians, have taken over the camp,\u201d he lamented.<\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nLiberian Camp, he said, had outlived its usefulness and must be dismantled.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cops Murders <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gomoa<br \/>\nBudumburam adjoining Kasoa, both in the Central Region, made negative headlines<br \/>\nwhen some elements in the area murdered two police MTTD officers two weeks ago.<br \/>So<br \/>\ngruesome were the murders that the story attracted a nationwide<br \/>\nattention. <\/p>\n<p>As if it that was not enough,<br \/>\nGhanaians woke up to the murder of a sub-chief at Gomoa Akranman, Nana Yaw<br \/>\nEgyir, over a land dispute. The crime scene is also in the general area of Budumburam.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Police<br \/>\nProbe <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Soon after the murder of the two police officers and public expressions about how some law enforcement agents had compromised their office, the acting IGP instituted a probe into the allegations. <\/p>\n<p><strong>By A.R.
