{"id":704262,"date":"2019-09-12T17:03:25","date_gmt":"2019-09-12T17:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/09\/12\/nana-beats-mahama-on-corruption-fight\/"},"modified":"2019-09-12T17:03:25","modified_gmt":"2019-09-12T17:03:25","slug":"nana-beats-mahama-on-corruption-fight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/09\/12\/nana-beats-mahama-on-corruption-fight\/","title":{"rendered":"Nana Beats Mahama On Corruption Fight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>President Akufo-Addo and John Mahama<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>President<br \/>\nNana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has beaten former President John Dramani Mahama on<br \/>\nthe recent corruption rating posted by the world-acclaimed Transparency<br \/>\nInternational with regard to its afrobarometer report on corruption for the<br \/>\nyears 2015 and 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\ndrop in the incidence of corruption at the Presidency from the figure of 47% in<br \/>\n2015 to 27% speaks volumes about which of the two leaders deserves plaudits<br \/>\nsince the New Patriotic Party (NPP) took over as the ruling party.<\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nhighly esteemed and much awaited Transparency International\u2019s 2019<br \/>\nAfrobarometer Report should constitute an unbiased response to the opposition<br \/>\nNational Democratic Congress\u2019 (NDC) claim that former President Mahama has a<br \/>\nbetter anti-corruption record. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Declining Corruption Rate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nmost significant aspect of the survey report is the steady decline in the<br \/>\nincidence of corruption in the country since the previous government was<br \/>\nreplaced by the current. <\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nreport has it that whereas the overall bribery rate in 2015 stood at 36%, this<br \/>\nfigure dropped to 33% in 2019. <\/p>\n<p>In<br \/>\npublic schools, the figure of 24% for incidence of bribery dropped to 15% this<br \/>\nyear. For public clinics and health centres, the 2015 figure of 17% dropped to<br \/>\n12% in 2019 and in IDs, the 2015 figure of 38% read 33% in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>In<br \/>\nthe area of public utilities, the incidence of bribery of 35% in 2015 fell to<br \/>\n23% in 2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bribery In Police<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of<br \/>\nparticular importance is the decline in the incidence of bribery in the police<br \/>\nwhich figure of 58% in 2015 changed to 24% this year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Corruption In Institutions <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\ncorruption rate of 47% among MPs in 2015 dropped to 27% in 2019 under the<br \/>\npresent government and the figure of 53% for government officials dropping to<br \/>\n35% this year.<\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nfigure of 43% for local government officials dropped to 27% and among judges<br \/>\nand magistrates, the figure of 49% reduced to 38%.<\/p>\n<p>Among<br \/>\nreligious leaders, the figure of 25% went down to 17% and among NGOs, the<br \/>\nfigure of 25% changed to 14% this year.<\/p>\n<p>Among<br \/>\nbusiness executives, corruption figure of 44% fell to 22% and that of traditional<br \/>\nleaders moved from 37% to 28%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Has Corruption Dropped?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Seventy-six<br \/>\nper cent (76%) of Ghanaians surveyed in 2015 felt corruption level had<br \/>\nincreased in the past 12 months but in 2019 only 23% thought so.<\/p>\n<p>In<br \/>\n2015, 8% of Ghanaians thought corruption level decreased in the past 12 months<br \/>\nbut in 2019 the figure increased to 36%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is Government Doing Well?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In<br \/>\n2015, whereas 25% of Ghanaians thought government was doing well in the fight<br \/>\nagainst corruption in 2019 the figure moved to 60%.<\/p>\n<p>With<br \/>\nthe government in power (Mahama &amp; NDC) in 2015 attracting 71% as doing<br \/>\nbadly in the fight against corruption, the President Akufo-Addo and his NPP had<br \/>\nonly 30% saying same.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas<br \/>\n33% of Ghanaians think corruption increased in the previous 12 months, 30% hold<br \/>\nthe view that government is doing a bad job at tackling it. <\/p>\n<p>Transparency<br \/>\nInternational is a global movement which seeks to rid countries of corruption<br \/>\nby periodically releasing such reports. It has more than 100 worldwide and an<br \/>\ninternational secretariat in Berlin, Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Corruption<br \/>\ncontinues to bedevil most African countries constituting the source of their<br \/>\ninability to provide social services to their peoples among other deficiencies.\n<\/p>\n<p>President<br \/>\nAkufo-Addo during his speech at the Ghana Bar Association conference in<br \/>\nTakoradi flaunted his record so far in the fight against corruption. <\/p>\n<p>He<br \/>\nreiterated specifically that he did not come to public office to enrich<br \/>\nhimself, a statement the opposition NDC has found it difficult to counter.<\/p>\n<p>Expectedly,<br \/>\nthe opposition NDC organized a press conference on Tuesday to challenge the<br \/>\nPresident on his claims of fighting corruption but could not say the President<br \/>\nis personally corrupt. <\/p>\n<p>The afrobarometer corruption report presents to Ghanaians and others the true picture of who has done better and showed sincerity in the fight against corruption.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>By A.R.
