Dean
\nof the School of Communication Studies of Wisconsin International University
\nCollege, Professor Kwame Karikari, has indicated that influence by military and
\none party government on state-owned media killed creative, imaginative and
\ncritical journalism in Ghana.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

\u201cState-owned
\npress in my estimation were very strong in promoting national consciousness and
\nthe development agenda of governments but the state-owned press have been
\nlargely pro-government and, therefore, they have contributed to the stunting of
\ncreative, imaginative and critical journalism,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Prof.
\nKarikari noted that despite the control by governments at that time, Ghana
\nstill produced some extraordinary column writers like Ms. Elizabeth Ohene and
\nMs. Ajoa Yeboah Afari, both of whom expressed their views through their
\nwritings.<\/p>\n

He,
\nhowever, said that the trend changed with the introduction of multiparty system
\nwhich gave birth to watchdog and investigative journalism pioneered by
\njournalists like Kofi Koomson of the Chronicle<\/em>.
\nThere had been some progress in journalism in modern times, he added.<\/p>\n

Prof.
\nKarikari who doubles as the board chair of the Graphic Communications Group
\nmentioned this when he delivered the first Ghana Journalists Association (GJA)
\n70th Anniversary Public Lecture in Accra.<\/p>\n

It
\nwas the first of three public lectures lined up by the GJA, on the advice of
\nits 70th Anniversary National Planning Committee (NPC), to discuss pertinent
\nissues in the media landscape.<\/p>\n

He
\nwas speaking on the topic: \u201cJournalism yesterday and today: Re-positioning
\nmedia with technology\u201d.<\/p>\n

Touching
\non the impact of technology on the media, Prof. Karikari said although the introduction
\nof technology in mass communication had yielded some positive results, it had
\nbrought a new challenge of what is known as \u2018fake news\u2019.<\/p>\n

He
\nstressed the need for journalists in traditional media to ensure that these new
\ntechnologies were made more positive for the news in mass communication.<\/p>\n

Prominent
\njournalist Ms. Elizabeth Ohene who chaired the event observed the need for the
\nmedia to maintain high standards of professionalism in the production of
\ncontent which is critical in journalism.<\/p>\n

The
\npublic lecture was attended by media practitioners, academics, politicians,
\ncivil society activists and representatives of international partners of the
\nGJA.<\/p>\n
