{"id":703273,"date":"2019-09-11T10:55:56","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T10:55:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/09\/11\/ndc-fights-akufo-addo-over-corruption\/"},"modified":"2019-09-11T10:55:56","modified_gmt":"2019-09-11T10:55:56","slug":"ndc-fights-akufo-addo-over-corruption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/09\/11\/ndc-fights-akufo-addo-over-corruption\/","title":{"rendered":"NDC Fights Akufo-Addo Over Corruption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Johnson Asiedu Nketia <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The opposition<br \/>\nNational Democratic Congress (NDC) has expectedly responded abrasively to<br \/>\nPresident Akufo-Addo\u2019s anti-corruption speech during the Ghana Bar Association\u2019s<br \/>\n(GBA) annual conference on Monday in Takoradi.<\/p>\n<p>The opposition<br \/>\nparty flatly denied the President credit for his achievements so far regarding<br \/>\nthe reported instances of corruption against some appointees his swift<br \/>\nresponses in referring the issues to the appropriate agencies and even<br \/>\nrelieving the suspects of their appointments notwithstanding. <\/p>\n<p>The party\u2019s<br \/>\nGeneral Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia, while delivering his party\u2019s response,<br \/>\nclaimed that the President has lowered the standards of the fight against<br \/>\ncorruption by the speech he delivered.<\/p>\n<p>It was a response<br \/>\nwhich failed to tackle directly some of the issues raised by the President<br \/>\nregarding how issues of reported instances of corruption are handled by<br \/>\nspecialised agencies of state. <\/p>\n<p>For Asiedu-Nketia<br \/>\nspeaking for the NDC, the President has \u201clowered the bar for the fight against<br \/>\ncorruption at the Bar conference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The President\u2019s<br \/>\nstance that the corruption scandals ascribed to the ruling party are<br \/>\nattributable to the opposition appeared to have hit the NDC hard as contained<br \/>\nin his response.<\/p>\n<p>The recent actions<br \/>\ntaken against persons who were reported to have engaged in corruption by the<br \/>\nPresident did not find space in the NDC\u2019s response the way it should.<\/p>\n<p>The NDC position<br \/>\nthat the President is refusing to admit the existence of corruption in his<br \/>\ngovernment appears to have ignored entirely the recent action taken against some<br \/>\ntop appointees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis (President<br \/>\nAkufo-Addo\u2019s) failure to admit the existence of corruption in his government is<br \/>\na very clear indication that he does not even recognize the problem and cannot<br \/>\nbe counted upon to address it. Because if you don\u2019t know the problem, how can<br \/>\nyou solve it?\u201dAsiedu-Nketia quizzed.<\/p>\n<p>Describing \u00a0President Akufo-Addo as the most corrupt head<br \/>\nof state when empirical evidence rather point to a former President from their<br \/>\nown camp reduced the NDC\u2019s scribe to the usual campaign trail ranting, full of<br \/>\nwords short in substance.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to<br \/>\ncriticisms that the President has become a \u201cclearing agent\u201d exonerating his<br \/>\nappointees accused of corruption, Nana Akufo-Addo argued otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>President<br \/>\nAkufo-Addo\u2019s belief in the rule of law is evident in the manner he handles<br \/>\nissues of corruption and governance in general. Such developments are quickly<br \/>\nreferred to the appropriate agencies to deal as the suspects at the centre of<br \/>\nthe storms are suspended without delay. <\/p>\n<p>Such officials<br \/>\nare deemed exonerated only when the appropriate agencies clear the suspects<br \/>\nevidence have showed so far. President Akufo-Addo\u2019s appointment of Martin Amidu<br \/>\nas the Special Prosecutor, a man associated rather with the opposition NDC,<br \/>\nearned him accolades and presented him as a President intent on fighting<br \/>\ncorruption.<\/p>\n<p>According to the<br \/>\nNDC, President Akufo-Addo used only \u201cflowery speeches and empty rhetoric,<br \/>\ndelivered in an acquired accent.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>That the<br \/>\nPresident\u2019s diction or even accent is the subject of Asiedu Nketia\u2019s delivery<br \/>\nhas robbed his reaction of the seriousness it deserves. <\/p>\n<p>It is the<br \/>\nPresident\u2019s manner of speaking which Asiedu Nketia said, \u201cConvinces people that<br \/>\ncorruption is being fought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turning to the<br \/>\ngovernment claims of saving some GH\u00a22.75 billion through the review of<br \/>\nsole-sources procurement contracts, the NDC scribe challenged the President\u201cto<br \/>\npublish the full list of such projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He taunted the<br \/>\nPresident with the former PPA CEO about whose corruption allegation the<br \/>\nPresident has acted already and earning accolades when he said, \u201cdidn\u2019t he know<br \/>\nthat the PPA boss was actually the source of the sole-sourced contracts?
