Disgruntled
\n2013\/14 Dislocated Workers Group of AngloGold Ashanti Ghana Limited, Obuasi
\nMine, is demanding their unpaid special compensation from the former employer
\nwith immediate effect.<\/p>\n
Few
\ndays ago the group held a press conference in Accra to press home for their
\nfinancial package. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The group\u2019s
\nspokesperson, Alex Frimpong, said its members, numbering
\nover 4,000, are owed between US$60,000 and US$125,000, based on the number of
\nyears one worked with the mining firm.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n
He
\nsaid \u201cWe requested some labour consultants to help us engage AngloGold Ashanti
\nto amicably resolve the issues so that we can receive our special compensation
\npay. However, AngloGold Ashanti in a letter to our consultants said they were
\nnot aware of any retrenchment carried out by AngloGold Ashanti in 2013.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis
\ndenial was shocking because it was common knowledge and a fact, that
\nretrenchment started from September, 2013, so what was AngloGold up to?\u201d<\/p>\n
He
\nadded \u201cWe ask AngloGold if they are aware that they started their unprecedented
\nretrenchment from September 2013. We are not worried if the company has no
\nanswer because there is incontrovertible evidence that AngloGold issued
\nretrenchment letters it now denies.\u201d<\/p>\n
To
\nthe group, they were encouraged by the views of Yaw Baah, TUC Secretary General,
\nat the 2018 May Day parade in Kumasi, stating that the new AngloGold employment
\narrangement was not proper and was only aimed at maximizing profit for the
\ncompany.<\/p>\n
The
\nspokesperson and his colleagues, clad in red bands, questioned what the TUC
\nboss\u2019 actions were after identifying the anomaly, and have consequently
\ndemanded concrete actions from the TUC which has benefitted from the former
\nAngloGold workers dues for many years. <\/p>\n
\u201cOur
\nconsultants in June, 2019, requested that the CEO of AngloGold in South Africa,
\nshould intervene and have our monies paid to us but as of today our
\nconsultants\u00a0 have not received any
\nresponse nor has receipts of our letter been acknowledged,\u201d said Frimpong.<\/p>\n
He
\nmentioned that the group has instructed its consultants to engage the
\nappropriate authority and have the matter settled amicably through an
\nappropriate audit and verification.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen
\nthey laid us off, they were supposed to give us special compensation but up till
\nnow, we have not received anything\u2026That is why we have come here to stage a
\npress.\u201d<\/p>\n
Last
\nJuly, the group embarked on a massive protest to push for their financial
