The Graduate Students
\nAssociation of Ghana (GRASAG) has called for the immediate withdrawal of the
\nPublic Universities Bill which has been drafted by the government, pending
\nparliamentary consideration and approval.<\/p>\n

According to the president of
\nGRASAG, Samuel Sagoe, the association \u201chas strong reservations
\nagainst the bill and calls for an outright withdrawal of the bill from our
\npublic discourse.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is our considered view
\nthat, laws are essentially made to solve societal problem or cure a mischief.
\nHowever, certain provisions of this bill only create the avenue for mischief
\nand largely destroy academic freedom,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr. Sagoe added that \u201cthe
\ndrafters of this bill may have good intentions but leaving certain provisions
\nof the bill the way it is now will only create avenue for a politician with ill
\nintentions to manipulate and unduly control policy directions, appointments and
\npromotions of our public universities in Ghana.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking at its handing over
\nceremony held over the weekend at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and
\nTechnology (KNUST), the president of GRASAG also called for the relocation of
\nthe Pan African Parliament from South Africa. This follows the recent xenophobic
\nattack on some Africans from the former apartheid country.<\/p>\n

Mr. Sagoe stated that \u201cthe
\ncontinual nasty and inappropriate act of brutality on some Africans who are
\ngoing about their normal duty in a fellow African country is unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe danger is that, the same
\nhatred if not curtailed could be extended to foreign students pursuing their
\npost graduate studies in South Africa. And this is why GRASAG is worried.\u201d He
\nsaid.<\/p>\n

Mr. Sagoe also condemned the
\nrather weak verbal intervention of the President of South Africa, Cyril
\nRamaphosa, which sought to claim that the action is the handiwork of criminals
\nand the subtle attempt by the South African High Commissioner to Ghana to
\njustify the barbaric acts, stating that the sayings of these officials \u201crather
\ngive credence to the fear of many that officialdom has sanctioned the attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n

The GRASAG President also used
\nthe opportunity to highlight some activities that the Association intends to
\nembark on in this academic year.<\/p>\n
