{"id":701707,"date":"2019-09-09T10:25:41","date_gmt":"2019-09-09T10:25:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ghana-mma.com\/2019\/09\/09\/ashanti-publishers-want-ges-guideline-deferred\/"},"modified":"2019-09-09T10:25:41","modified_gmt":"2019-09-09T10:25:41","slug":"ashanti-publishers-want-ges-guideline-deferred","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/09\/09\/ashanti-publishers-want-ges-guideline-deferred\/","title":{"rendered":"Ashanti Publishers Want GES Guideline Deferred"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Executives of the association at the media briefing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Members of the<br \/>\nAshanti Region Writers and Publishers Association (ASHWAPA) have appealed<br \/>\npassionately to the government to defer the implementation of the new Ghana<br \/>\nEducation Service (GES) submission guideline until the next academic year to<br \/>\nenable them to prepare adequately for it.<\/p>\n<p>According to them,<br \/>\nthe implementation of the regulatory tweak, which is being introduced as part<br \/>\nof the new education curriculum commencing 2019\/2020 in line with the ongoing<br \/>\nreforms in the sector, would hurt their businesses as they have in stock books<br \/>\nfor sale for this academic year.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the<br \/>\nmedia in Kumasi, ASHWAPA\u2019s Secretary, James Offeh Ford, said members of the<br \/>\nassociation would be driven out of business if the implementation is done for<br \/>\nthe 2019\/2020 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that<br \/>\nthe National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NaCCA) delayed in releasing the<br \/>\nnew guideline for submission of books for assessment when the new curriculum<br \/>\nwas launched by GES in April this year, hence the call for extension.<\/p>\n<p>He wants the<br \/>\nimplementation to start in the next academic year for them not to incur losses<br \/>\nand ensure fairness and effective competition in the book market.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Offeh Ford<br \/>\nalso wants government to review downwards the cost for submitting a book by<br \/>\nauthors and publishers for assessment and approval in the new arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>He claimed the<br \/>\nnew guideline had pegged the cost of submitting six sets of a 200-page book at<br \/>\nGH\u00a27,800 per author, pointing out that the new policy would undoubtedly stifle<br \/>\ntheir businesses, which would eventually lead to job losses in the publishing<br \/>\nindustry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means that if<br \/>\nyou have three sets of books you will have to pay GH\u00a22,300. These new costs<br \/>\nwill strangle our businesses and kill jobs in the industry,\u201d Mr. Offeh Ford<br \/>\nstressed.<\/p>\n<p>The secretary<br \/>\nappealed to the Ministry of Education to prevail on GES to allow them to sell<br \/>\ntheir current stocks of books, which he said were prepared in accordance with<br \/>\nthe new curriculum, so as to mitigate their loses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchools are resuming<br \/>\nand if books are not available on the market, it would adversely affect<br \/>\nacademic work, and Ghanaian children will be at the receiving end,\u201d Mr. Offeh<br \/>\nargued.<\/p>\n<p>The association<br \/>\nwas equally not happy about a decision by NaCCA to introduce a short code that<br \/>\nwould be used by the public to authenticate GES approved textbooks, describing<br \/>\nthe move as unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p>For him, if<br \/>\npublishers of foreign textbooks are allowed to sell without going through the<br \/>\nrigorous assessment of the GES, such code would only create additional<br \/>\nbureaucracy that would serve as a conduit for some people to take money from<br \/>\nauthors and publishers.<\/p>\n<p>He prayed for government\u2019s intervention in all these to save their businesses from collapsing, which he believes would also hurt the national economy. <\/p>\n<p><strong>From Ernest Kofi Adu, Kumasi<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Executives of the association at the media briefing Members of the Ashanti Region Writers and Publishers Association (ASHWAPA) have appealed passionately to the government to defer the implementation of the new Ghana Education Service (GES) submission guideline until the next academic year to enable them to prepare adequately for it.
