Former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor (R) and Jerry John Rawlings

Former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Jerry John Rawlings have expressed sadness over the death of late former President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe.

In separate statements, the two former Presidents eulogised Mr. Mugabe as one of Africa’s great freedom fighters.

In a statement issued by his Office, Mr. Kufuor said “I was deeply saddened upon hearing the death of former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on Friday 6th September 2019.”

According to the statement, the former leader of Zimbabwe was a pioneering leader of his people, self-willed, and one with a high level of intellect.

Mr. Mugabe, who died aged 95, the statement pointed out, led his nation through the struggles of liberation from colonialism and was very successful as a freedom fighter.

His earlier life of vicissitudes in long political, exile, racism, resistance to land grab in his nation and general colonial imposition, it added, hardened him into an uncompromising political leader.

The statement continued that this contributed to his over-staying in office and to his eventual overthrow from government.

Nevertheless, he belongs with the liberation leaders of the African continent and the heroes who wrestled Africa from the clutches of colonialism and apartheid, it explained.

“I mourn with the government and people of Zimbabwe. May his soul rest in peace,” Mr. Kufuor said in the statement.

Mr. Rawlings in a tweet, said “RIP Comrade Mugabe. You lived for the dignity of your fellow black.

” Your African pride, dignity and audacity were unassailable. Africa has lost a bold and noble Statesman. “
