Truth is in there\u2026\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO: GRA to name and shame tax defaulters<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><iframe loading=\"lazy\" height=\"268\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fgabby.a.otcheredarko%2Fposts%2F10157549272797959&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n<p>According to Gabby, \u201csome banks were struggling to survive by 2015\/16\/17\u2026The BoG, as a rescue package, initiated, with the support of government\u00a0a mergers and acquisitions programme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabby\u2019s defense comes amid growing criticism from members of the opposition NDC that the banking sector clean-up was just a move by government to collapse banks.<\/p>\n<p>Some have accused the Finance Minister of going after his competitors due to his\u00a0interest in Data Bank.<\/p>\n<p>The government has denied the allegations of intentionally collapsing banks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO: Xenophobic attacks: Ghana sets up emergency numbers for Ghanaians in distress<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Central Bank in many communiqu\u00e9s has explained<br \/>\nthat the banks and other financial institutions that have gone under since 2017<br \/>\ndid so as a result of liquidity challenges, mismanagement and in some cases<br \/>\ncriminal violations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the case of Sovereign Bank Limited, as part of Bank of Ghana\u2019s investigations into the failure of Capital Bank Limited (currently in receivership), it emerged that Sovereign Bank\u2019s license was obtained by false pretenses through the use of suspicious and nonexistent capital,\u201d the Bank of Ghana boss, Dr. Ernest Addison stated at a press conference.<\/p>\n<p>Seven of the collapsed banks have since been merged to form the Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited.<\/p>\n<p>Two of them, Capital Bank and UT Bank were absorbed by GCB Bank.<\/p>\n<p>The Ghana Amalgamated Trust (GAT) was set up recently to help recapitalise five well-managed banks who have been unable to meet the new capital requirement of GH\u00a2400 million.<\/p>\n<p>The Minority in Parliament, however, believes the government is using GAT as a maneuver to \u201csteal\u201d NIB and ADB two state-owned banks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source: Myjoyonline.com<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Asare Otchere-Darko A close confidante of President Nana Akufo-Addo, Asare Otchere-Darko has fought of claims that the governing NPP has collapsed banks.
