Dr Ernest Addison, BoG Governor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\nThe
\n General Overseer of the Action Faith Chapel International has said it
\ntroubles him that there is no indigenous bank that has been able to make
\n it internationally. <\/p>\n
Archbishop Anthony Duncan-Williams during his Sunday morning sermon lamented the lack of support for local banks.<\/p>\n
\u201cI
\n have not seen one Ghanaian bank on CNN, is all Nigerian banks on CNN
\nadvertising. It breaks my heart and I ask myself when will any bank in
\nGhana rise to be in compliance, do the right thing and succeed? he
\nlamented.\u00a0<\/p>\n
His comments come at a time\u00a0the central\u00a0bank has closed over 300 microfinance companies as the last phase of its\u00a0clean-up of the financial sector. <\/p>\n
In August 2018, the Bank of Ghana\u00a0revoked the licences of uniBank
\nGhana Limited, The Royal Bank Limited, Beige Bank Limited, Sovereign
\nBank Limited, and Construction Bank Limited.\u00a0<\/p>\n
In 2017, UT Bank and Capital Bank doors were closed permanently, as
\nBoG explained that\u00a0the banks were \u201cunable to develop an acceptable
\nplan.\u201d<\/p>\n
This development the pastor believes doesn\u2019t augur well for a country wanting to create jobs and wealth for its citizenry.<\/p>\n
The
\n archbishop wants government to follow the protectionist policies of\u00a0the
\n Nigerian government, which has seen many of its banks flourishing and
\nentrepreneurs succeeding both locally and internationally.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Citing Aliko Dangote, a
\nNigerian business magnate estimated to be worth\u00a0\u00a0$10.6 billion
\nto\u00a0support his claim, the man of God\u00a0said, \u201cthe Nigerian government made
\n sure one of their own rose to become a household name.\u201d<\/p>\n
He claimed the contrary is what is pertains\u00a0in Ghana.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Duncan-Williams told his congregation that\u00a0foreigners have taken over the business and every space in the country because the government prefers foreigners to prosper than its own people.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey prefer to cut deal with foreigners and let foreigners take our
\ninheritance and give us crumbs and peanuts rather than to make deals
\nwith a Ghanaian,\u201d he observed.<\/p>\n
He alleged that\u00a0it is this
\nattitude which has seen successive governments attacking Zoomlion, an
\nindigenous sanitation company with other business interest.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t want to be political but if you look at people like Zoomlion
\n and others, Zoomlion is a Ghanaian, but every government that has come
\nwill go after Zoomlion because they don\u2019t understand why a Ghanaian
\nshould make it that big,\u201d he said<\/p>\n
\u201cThe level of insecurity, jealousy and envy in this country is amazing. Our political system is designed\u00a0to enhance\u00a0jealousy and envy. We have become a society of bringing down one another,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
