{"id":690273,"date":"2019-08-24T05:38:58","date_gmt":"2019-08-24T05:38:58","guid":{"rendered":"<br><div>\n\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"21\">Grasshoppers have ravaged many farms in Shongom and Balanga Local Government Areas of Gombe State, an official, Sunday Lah, has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"31\">"},"modified":"2019-08-24T05:38:58","modified_gmt":"2019-08-24T05:38:58","slug":"nigeria-grasshoppers-ravage-farms-in-gombe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/08\/24\/nigeria-grasshoppers-ravage-farms-in-gombe\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria: Grasshoppers Ravage Farms in Gombe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"21\">Grasshoppers have ravaged many farms in Shongom and Balanga Local Government Areas of Gombe State, an official, Sunday Lah, has said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"31\">Mr Lah told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Friday that the damage was more devastating in Burak and Dadiya villages where the grasshoppers ravaged all crops planted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"20\">&#8220;The farms in those areas were completely ravaged because the incident was high and alarming, nothing was left for farmers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"22\">&#8220;The grasshoppers ravaged all the farms in the areas and crops like Soya Beans, Maize, Sorghum were completely eaten up,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"39\">Mr Lah, who is the Director Extension Service in the State Agriculture Development Project, explained that the affected farmers had opted to plant sesame &#8220;because there is nothing left for them to harvest at the end of the day.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"15\">He called for &#8220;appropriate measures&#8221; to curtail the grasshoppers to forestall further damages to farms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"27\">The director further disclosed that in Dukku LGA, farmers are contending with the problem of a serious case of worms infestations that had also destroyed many crops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"30\">He said that farmers have been advised to use insecticides to curtail the prevalence of the grasshoppers and worms pending when the government conducts aerial spray to destroy the pests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"25\">&#8220;Definitely if the whole place is ravaged, the crop yield will be zero and food security impaired thereby posing threats to human lives,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"18\">Mr Lah, therefore, called on the government at all level to look at the issue with all seriousness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"1\">(NAN)<\/p>\n<p><!--\/.story-footer-link--><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Grasshoppers have ravaged many farms in Shongom and Balanga Local Government Areas of Gombe State, an official, Sunday Lah, has said.
