{"id":687412,"date":"2019-08-21T08:28:54","date_gmt":"2019-08-21T08:28:54","guid":{"rendered":"<br><div>\n<p>Former National Democratic Congress National Organiser, Kofi Adams says the New Patriotic Party government\u2019s decision to halt road projects for audits contributed greatly to Ghana\u2019s current infrastructure deficit.<\/p>\n<p>The audits were becau"},"modified":"2019-08-21T08:28:54","modified_gmt":"2019-08-21T08:28:54","slug":"halting-road-projects-was-wrong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/08\/21\/halting-road-projects-was-wrong\/","title":{"rendered":"Halting road projects was wrong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Former National Democratic Congress National Organiser, Kofi Adams says the New Patriotic Party government\u2019s decision to halt road projects for audits contributed greatly to Ghana\u2019s current infrastructure deficit.<\/p>\n<p>The audits were because the Mahama administration was accused of awarding over 230 different road contracts to the tune of GHc3.5 billion to the detriment of COCOBOD\u2019s finances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reason why I blame them is\u2026 in the name of investigating corruption, you stopped infrastructure projects,\u201d Mr. Adams told Godfred Akoto Boafo on <strong>Citi TV\u2019s Face to Face <\/strong>program no Tuesday.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cAll you needed to do was to stop payment or to pay for what has been done\u2026so they [contractors] can continue with work whilst you [NPP government] investigate if there was any underhand dealing.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>A stain on successive governments has been the inability to complete the Eastern Corridor road which runs from the Greater Accra, Volta, North East and Upper East regions.<\/p>\n<p>It stretches from Tema through Akosombo, Juapong, Hohoe, Jasikan, Kadjebi, Nkwanta, Kpasa and Oti Damanko to Bimbilla, Yendi, Garu, Misiga and to Kulungugu, in the Upper East Region.<\/p>\n<p>The road is one of the most important socio-economic pieces of infrastructure in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The NDC has also not been happy with the NPP government for halting roads being funded by COCOBOD.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Adams cited the Hohoe to Jasikan road which was being overseen by COCOBOD where he said the \u201cstopping of the project caused a mess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The government has since lifted the suspension and has said contractors are being supplied funds to resume work.<\/p>\n<p>But Mr. Adams, who was confident the NDC will return to power, said a new NDC government will be more prudent in handing suspected corruption.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIt is one thing I am going to fight when the NDC comes to power. We don\u2019t do that and I don\u2019t think that we are going to do that\u2026We will punish wrongdoing but we will allow projects to continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On the whole, Mr. Adams dismissed the government\u2019s hailing of infrastructure development as mere propaganda.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cDevelopment must be seen and felt. You don\u2019t have to be told.
