20, GNA \u2013 A study\u00a0 conducted by the Africa RISING Project, Ghana<br \/>\nhas revealed that access to extension services, guaranteed markets for produce<br \/>\nand poor road networks continue to be major problems confronting farmers in the<br \/>\ncountry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The study, \u201cAssessing institutions enabling<br \/>\nor constraining access to output and input markets by farm house-holds and<br \/>\ndelivery pathways for sustainable intensification technologies\u201d, was conducted<br \/>\nin the three northern regions of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">It called for improved policies and<br \/>\ninstitutional arrangements to increase participation of farm families,<br \/>\nespecially women and youth in the output and input markets and decision-making;<br \/>\nand advocated for implementation by national government, policy makers and<br \/>\ndevelopment partners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The Science and Technology Policy Research<br \/>\nInstitute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-STEPRI)<br \/>\nis a collaborating agency for the Africa RISING Project and since 2017 it has<br \/>\nbeen analyzing policies that impact on small-holders farmers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The Africa RISING project, being implemented<br \/>\nin West Africa and East Africa with several collaborators (farmers,<br \/>\nresearchers, policy institutions, among others), is aimed at generating and<br \/>\ndisseminating technologies for the adoption of small holder farmers for<br \/>\nimproved livelihoods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Dr Adams Abdulai, Research Scientist and the<br \/>\nTeam Leader, speaking at a validation workshop in Accra, said in Ghana, the<br \/>\nproject targets small holder farmers in northern Ghana engaged in crop (maize<br \/>\nand cowpea and livestock (small ruminants) production and technologies<br \/>\ngenerated in those areas were disseminated to farmers through the concept of<br \/>\n\u201cTechnology Parks\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">He said the project was linked to the<br \/>\nSustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1, 2 and 15 relating to anger, job creation<br \/>\nand employment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">He said the validation workshop was to<br \/>\ngather more inputs into the study report and share widely the findings and<br \/>\nrecommendations of the report for greater policy and institutional support at<br \/>\nvarious levels to improve the living conditions of farming households.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">The aim of African rising program is to<br \/>\ncreate opportunities for small holder households to come out of hunger and<br \/>\npoverty using Sustainable Intensification (SI) as a tool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Dr Abdulai said currently the project<br \/>\noperates in Southern, Eastern and Western Africa.\u00a0 In West Africa it covers Ghana and Mali.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">He said various factors influence the choice<br \/>\nof farmers in using different market channels and called for action based on<br \/>\nthe significant variables revealed for the market channels, effective extension<br \/>\nservice delivery coupled with the provision of business advisory service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Dr Adams said other areas that needed<br \/>\nattention are the financial support to small holder farmers to facilitate the<br \/>\nadoption of Sustainable Intensification practices and marketing and enforcing<br \/>\ngrades and standards in markets to increase the economic welfare of farmers<br \/>\nthrough fair practice in trading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Dr Mavis Dayie, a Research Scientist,<br \/>\npresenting research findings on \u201cDelivery Pathways of Sustainable Intensification<br \/>\nTechnologies, Practice and the Role of Government Extension Service\u201d, said the<br \/>\nlearning mechanism and delivery pathways employed in the dissemination of SI<br \/>\ntechnologies are very effective leading to higher adoption rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p
