The government has been urged to make it mandatory for all hospitals to<br \/>\nuse the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to treat victims of crime<br \/>\nparticularly children and women who become victims of defilement, rape and<br \/>\nother forms of assault.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;mso-fareast-font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;&#10;color:#333333;border:none windowtext 1.0pt;mso-border-alt:none windowtext 0cm;&#10;padding:0cm;mso-ansi-language:#2000;mso-fareast-language:#2000\">Mr Issah<br \/>\nMahmudu, Northern Regional Director of the Legal Aid Commission, who made the<br \/>\ncall, said this would ensure that such victims, no matter their financial<br \/>\nconditions, would have access to medical treatment and medical reports to be<br \/>\nused to seek justice at the law courts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span selected<br \/>\npolice personnel drawn from the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions to<br \/>\nbuild their capacity to promote and protect the rights of children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;mso-fareast-font-family:&quot;Times New by the Legal Resources Centre (LRC) as part of its Justice for<br \/>\nChildren project, dubbed \u201cJustice for Children: Bridging the gap between<br \/>\nLegislation and Practice\u201d, which is being implemented with support from the<br \/>\nEuropean Union.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;mso-fareast-font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;&#10;color:#333333;border:none windowtext broad<br \/>\noutlook of the country\u2019s justice for children system by ensuring that children<br \/>\nin conflict and in contact with the law are adequately protected and their<br \/>\nrights promoted through targeted interventions including policy and legislative<br \/>\nreforms as well as enhanced service delivery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span pay medical<br \/>\nofficers to treat and endorse police medical forms for them was hindering<br \/>\nvictims\u2019 access to health care and justice at the courts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;mso-fareast-font-family:&quot;Times New defiled or assaulted or any person is assaulted, they have to get a<br \/>\nmedical form from the Police and send it to the hospital for treatment and a<br \/>\nmedical report to be issued to confirm the assault or the crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-size:11.0pt;&#10;font-family:&quot;Tahoma&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;;mso-fareast-font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;&#10;color:#333333;border:none windowtext medical reports<br \/>\nto the victims, a situation, which deprives victims, who cannot pay for such<br \/>\nreports the right to treatment and medical reports, which were crucial for<br \/>\nseeking redress at the law courts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span think the lives of the victims and the injuries that they sustain<br \/>\nshould be of paramount interest and not cash-and-carry, pay and then we examine<br \/>\nyou and give you the report, if you do not pay, we will not examine you and we<br \/>\ndo not give you the report.
