He,<br \/>\ntherefore, observed that anything aside from the existing ones was an<br \/>\nadditional tax to the consumer.<\/p>\n<p>He advised<br \/>\ngovernment to look at how to use mobile money as a tool to expand the tax net<br \/>\ninstead of considering additional taxes on it.<\/p>\n<p>According to<br \/>\nhim, \u201cIf we can digitize tax payment through the platform, then we can rather<br \/>\nuse the mobile money to expand the tax net and collect taxes from many more<br \/>\nGhanaians. In this case, we have data and information on them that can provide<br \/>\nenough guidance and information.\u201d He argued that taxation would deepen the<br \/>\npoverty gap. <\/p>\n<p>According to<br \/>\nhim, \u201cIn Ghana, about 25 % of the population is below the poverty line; the<br \/>\nnegative impact of taxing mobile money transactions is likely to fall most<br \/>\nheavily on these individuals. Imposing taxes may increase the percentage within<br \/>\nthe poverty bracket.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Director of<br \/>\nResearch at Bank of Ghana (BoG), Philip Abradu-Otoo, in his presentation, said<br \/>\nthe BoG takes cognizance of the issues raised at the forum.<\/p>\n<p>Mr.<br \/>\nAbradu-Otoo assured the gathering that he would channel all concerns raised<br \/>\nincluding taxation, transactional limit and fraud to the appropriate<br \/>\ndepartments to be incorporated into the current policy framework being worked<br \/>\non.<\/p>\n<p>He thanked<br \/>\nMTN for its contribution to the growth of Ghana\u2019s economy and pledged<br \/>\ngovernment\u2019s partnership with the private sector to fight poverty.
