Subscribe to Fin24&#8217;s newsletter here<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"43\">SAA is just one of eight airlines that were fined for this in the same period. According to Motsoaledi&#8217;s written reply, the fines imposed on SAA more than doubled from R2.1m in the 2016-17 financial year to R4.4m in the 2017&#8211;18 financial year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"46\">But SAA is, by no means, the leader of the pack when it comes to the total value in fines. The national carrier is second behind Emirates Airline, which racked up R2.6m in fines during the 2016-17 financial year and R6.9m in the 2017-18 financial year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"40\">Other airways that had unpaid fines for the same transgression included Kenyan Airline (R2.3m in 2017-18), British Airways (R1.3m in 2017-18), Qatar Airline (R1.3m in 2017-18) and Etihad Airways (R825 000 in 2017-18). READ: Executives abandon state companies over indecision<\/p>\n<p><!--\/.outer-ad-container.responsive-aans-view-a-container--><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"20\">Motsoaledi said further detail regarding the fines could not be provided because of &#8220;challenges with the revenue management reconciliation mechanism&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"23\">&#8220;The Department is engaging the National Treasury with a view to implement improved measures, systems and revenue management and reconciliation mechanism,&#8221; said Motsoaledi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"17\">Motsoaledi said no arrangements were made to address the arrears as fines were not regarded as debt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"38\">&#8220;National Treasury indicated in a letter dated May 15, 2018 that fines are not regarded as debt or revenue due to the Department since it is not money outstanding in respect of products or services rendered,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"20\">He added that there were no plans to take action against any of the airlines over the arrears in fines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"2\">Source: <strong>Fin24<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--\/.story-footer-link--><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Home Affairs has fined South African Airways over R4m in the 2017-18 financial year for bringing undocumented migrants to South Africa, according to a written reply to Parliament from Minister of Home Affairs Aaron Motsoeledi.
