{"id":672778,"date":"2019-08-05T18:49:15","date_gmt":"2019-08-05T18:49:15","guid":{"rendered":"<br><div>\n\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"21\">Harare \u2014 ZIMBABWEAN civil society organisations have accused the government of violating citizens' rights following the outbreak of typhoid affecting hundreds of people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-b"},"modified":"2019-08-05T18:49:15","modified_gmt":"2019-08-05T18:49:15","slug":"zimbabwe-typhoid-eruption-gives-zimbabwe-a-health-scare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/08\/05\/zimbabwe-typhoid-eruption-gives-zimbabwe-a-health-scare\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe: Typhoid Eruption Gives Zimbabwe a Health Scare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"21\">Harare \u2014 ZIMBABWEAN civil society organisations have accused the government of violating citizens&#8217; rights following the outbreak of typhoid affecting hundreds of people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"24\">More than 800 cases of the water borne disease have been recorded this year in some high density areas of the capital city, Harare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"14\">The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) and Community Water Alliance (CWA) expressed dismay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"28\">&#8220;ZLHR and CWA are appalled that in 2019, we continue to record outbreaks of cases of typhoid, a medieval water-borne disease that is largely preventable,&#8221; they stated jointly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"28\">&#8220;This is an indictment on local and central government and exposes gross negligence on the part of the state that continues to dismally fail to fulfill constitutional obligations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"34\">The organisations argued the prevailing situation in the suburbs of Glenview and Budiriro was an infringement to citizens&#8217; fundamental rights to health care, right to clean, safe and potable water as well as dignity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"26\">CWA and ZLHR reported that over the years, they had repeatedly highlighted the key drivers of the outbreak of typhoid and other waterborne diseases to government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"29\">Causes include the erratic supplies of clean water in most urban communities, supply of contaminated water and failure to attend to the leaking of raw sewage into the environment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"12\">The typhoid outbreak is the latest test to Zimbabwe&#8217;s struggling health sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"13\">In March, the country embarked on a first typhoid vaccination campaign in Africa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text\" data-para-word-count=\"7\">Then, 17 people had been reported dead.<\/p>\n<p><!--\/.story-footer-link--><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Harare \u2014 ZIMBABWEAN civil society organisations have accused the government of violating citizens&#8217; rights following the outbreak of typhoid affecting hundreds of people.
