{"id":672419,"date":"2019-08-05T13:26:06","date_gmt":"2019-08-05T13:26:06","guid":{"rendered":" <br><div>\n\t\t\n<p><strong>Some of the head porters during the graduation ceremony<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opportunity\nInternational Savings and Loans organized a graduation ceremony for head\nporters (kayayei) after successful completion of a livelihood and skil"},"modified":"2019-08-05T13:26:06","modified_gmt":"2019-08-05T13:26:06","slug":"opportunity-international-trains-kayayei","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/08\/05\/opportunity-international-trains-kayayei\/","title":{"rendered":"Opportunity International Trains Kayayei &#8211;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Some of the head porters during the graduation ceremony<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Opportunity<br \/>\nInternational Savings and Loans organized a graduation ceremony for head<br \/>\nporters (kayayei) after successful completion of a livelihood and skills training<br \/>\nprogramme at WAG-SEVICO Skills Training Institute in Accra. <\/p>\n<p>The occasion was<br \/>\ngraced by Naa Alhaji Chackson Osman, the Mamprusi Community Chief of Accra,<br \/>\nincluding other high-profile dignitaries.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-four (24) young<br \/>\ngirls who were working as head porters in Accra were taken through three-week<br \/>\nintensive residential training on vocational skills such as bead making, soap<br \/>\nmaking and bakery.<\/p>\n<p>They were allowed<br \/>\nto choose a trade out of the various vocations to enable them earn some income<br \/>\nto fend for themselves and their families. Upon successful graduation, they<br \/>\nwere provided with their business start-up kits for the chosen trade. As part<br \/>\nof the project, some of the girls would also receive start-up capital for their<br \/>\nbusinesses.<\/p>\n<p>Fifteen (15) of<br \/>\nthe girls who currently reside at Maamobi in Accra have<br \/>\nindicated their readiness to relocate to the north (their home)\u00a0and ply<br \/>\ntheir chosen trade in and around the Gambaga Market near Tamale, whilst the<br \/>\nremaining nine want to stay in Accra due to family and other commitments.<\/p>\n<p>In his opening<br \/>\naddress, Kwame Owusu-Boateng, Chief Executive Officer of Opportunity<br \/>\nInternational Savings and Loans, encouraged the participants to make good use<br \/>\nof the skills they had acquired. <\/p>\n<p>Naa Alhaji Chackson<br \/>\nOsman thanked Opportunity International for such an intervention, saying \u201cI\u2019ve<br \/>\nseen several interventions for Kayayei but this one is exceptional.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The project was<br \/>\nfunded by Car Val Investors Foundation in the UK.\u00a0 Car Val Investors Foundation supports organisations<br \/>\nthat help highly vulnerable people in the world.
