Ken Ofori-Atta<\/strong><\/p>\nGOVERNMENT
\nSAYS it has made a significant impact in the lives of Ghanaians since it took
\nover the administration of the country.<\/p>\n
It
\nsaid it had reduced poverty, bridged inequality gaps, provided adequate and
\naccessible quality education, improved healthcare and provided affordable
\nhousing.<\/p>\n
Besides,
\nit said it had promoted a vibrant agricultural sector and improved food
\nsecurity, ensured robust security measures and revitalized industries, amongst
\nothers. <\/p>\n
Finance
\nMinister Ken Ofori-Atta, who made this known in Parliament on Tuesday, said the
\nimplementation of the 2019 budget was on course.<\/p>\n
He
\nannounced: \u201cWe are ready to take on board the third cohort of the Free SHS
\nstudents in September 2019.\u00a0 We have started
\npaying contractors who have certificates valued up to GH\u00a2500,000 and planned to
\nclear these by the end of the year. In keeping with our promise, the referendum
\nto decide on the election of MMDCEs will come off in December 2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
He
\nsaid government had issued a number of commencement approvals for work to begin
\non a number of roads, drains, fish landing sites and housing projects, adding
\nthat the relevant ministries and development authorities are expected to complete
\nprocurement processes and award contracts for work to begin on all projects by
\nOctober 2019.<\/p>\n
According
\nto him, such programmes would generate critical economic activities, provide
\njob opportunities and improve incomes for masons, carpenters, food vendors,
\nroad and general contractors and many others in the informal sectors of Ghana. <\/p>\n
\u201cThese
\npriority programmes further underscore government\u2019s commitment towards
\nachieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As part of government
\nefforts to address the need for improvement in rural roads, government in the
\ncoming weeks will set up a committee which will include officers of the 48
\nEngineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces, to spearhead a new national
\neffort of mobilizing local authorities to construct passable critical feeder
\nroads, related drainage and bridges across the country. <\/p>\n
\u201cLocal authorities will be supported to urgently deploy road equipment by assisting with the repairs of any broken down equipment\u2026 We will work with the ministers for Local Government & Rural Development, Roads and Highways and the Special Development Initiatives to explore all available financing options within the budget.\u201d<\/p>\n
