A Louisiana policeman was being investigated Monday for suggesting a liberal congresswoman should be shot, as President Donald Trump\u2019s tweets attacking Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other lawmakers sparked a national uproar.<\/p>\n
The officer\u2019s Facebook post followed criticism that the president\u2019s incendiary rhetoric, which continued Monday with a new tweet about the four \u201cvery racist\u201d and \u201cnot very smart\u201d Democratic congresswomen, was bordering on incitement to violence.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis vile idiot needs a round\u2026\u2026.and I don\u2019t mean the kind she used to serve,\u201d Charlie Rispoli, of the Gretna police department, wrote of former bartender Ocasio-Cortez, according to local media.<\/p>\n
The post, which has been removed, prompted Gretna police chief Arthur Lawson to order an investigation, vowing that he was \u201cnot going to take this lightly,\u201d according to Louisiana news site NOLA. <\/p>\n
Over the past week Trump has tweeted multiple attacks on Ocasio-Cortez and fellow first-term, ethnic minority lawmakers Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar and Ayanna Pressley.<\/p>\n
The rhetoric provoked angry outcries from Democrats, and denunciations from some Republicans, as the parties gear up for an intense 2020 presidential race.<\/p>\n
The four lawmakers \u2014 who have become known collectively as the \u201cSquad\u201d \u2014 appeared to be coming under increasing threat in the wake of Trump\u2019s attacks.<\/p>\n
The Illinois Republican County Chairmen\u2019s Association branded them \u201cThe Jihad Squad\u201d in a movie poster-style meme featuring the slogan \u201cpolitical jihad is their game.\u201d<\/p>\n
Omar and Tlaib are the first two Muslim women in Congress.<\/p>\n
The poster, which has since been removed from the group\u2019s page, shows Omar appearing to hold a large shotgun, while Pressley brandishes a pistol.<\/p>\n
Association president Mark Shaw said he condemned the \u201cunauthorized posting,\u201d but then went on to criticize the \u201csocialist\u201d lawmakers for their politics.<\/p>\n
The Cook County Democratic Party in Illinois accused the Republican group of perpetuating \u201clies and racism\u201d and said such bigotry \u201chas dangerous consequences.\u201d <\/p>\n
But Trump downplayed his broader clash with the squad, telling reporters Monday \u201cthere\u2019s no racial tension,\u201d even as he insisted the lawmakers are \u201cvery bad for our country.\u201d<\/p>\n
A week earlier Trump tweeted that the women \u2014 all US citizens, three of whom were born in America \u2014 they should \u201cgo back\u201d to other countries.<\/p>\n
Days later, as he singled out Omar for criticism at a campaign rally, his supporters chanted \u201csend her back!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
