The Ghana Navy
\nis in hot pursuit of pirates who hijacked a vessel from the Tema anchorage and
\nproceeded towards Togolese waters but abandoned the operation midway. <\/p>\n

The Officer
\nCommanding the Eastern Naval Command Commodore, James Kontoh, said this shortly
\nafter a Ghana Navy operation rescued five persons, one of them a Ghanaian, from
\nthe abandoned vessel.<\/p>\n

Some of the
\nhijacked persons were beaten by their abductors before being abandoned aboard
\nthe vessel.<\/p>\n

Commodore
\nKontoh said collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and their Ghanaian
\ncounterparts is on. He said this is a measure which would go a long way in
\nthwarting the activities of pirates.<\/p>\n

The daredevil
\nhijack mission started with a fishing vessel going missing from the Tema
\nanchorage, having been taken away by the suspected Nigerian pirates who
\nabandoned it later on the Keta high seas. <\/p>\n

The hijackers
\nhad planned having the tuna vessel head for Bayelsa State in Nigeria but abandoned
\nthe idea due to fuel shortage.<\/p>\n

A traumatized crew member found
\naboard the abandoned vessel was taken to a health facility for attention.<\/p>\n

The tuna vessel with official No.
\n316694 and registration\u00a0 AFT28 had docked
\nat Berth 10 at the Port of Tema and found on board by the Navy were live rounds,
\namong other items.<\/p>\n

The rescue mission was preceded
\nby a series of information by the Navy about vessels coming under attack by
\npirates \u2013 a situation which DAILY GUIDE<\/em><\/strong> gathered prompted the
\nGhana Navy to raise its alert level.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the past 48 hours, we have
\nhad a series of attacks which we tried to unravel. It all happened Monday dawn
\nabout 03:30 when a speed boat came to the Tema anchorage area and forcefully
\ntook over a vessel and started heading towards the Togolese waters until the
\nvessel complained of not having enough fuel to continue the journey,\u201d Commodore
\nKontoh said.<\/p>\n

In a sequence of events, the
\nhijackers let go the first vessel and descended upon a tanker vessel. The
\nhijackers transferred three persons from the first vessel
\nto the second one. There was shortage of fuel and so their order for the vessel
\nto head for Bayelsa in Nigeria was abandoned. They then turned to a fishing
\nvessel and took two crew members including the first three into the fishing
\nvessel and proceeded towards Benin waters close to Nigerian waters.<\/p>\n

When night fell, the hijackers
\nmoved their kidnapped persons into their speed boats and headed for an unknown
\nlocation, the Navy officer narrated. <\/p>\n

It was after the hijackers had left that the fishing vessel sent a signal about their situation when the Navy sent a team to save the distressed crew.<\/p>\n
