GOVERNMENT
\nYESTERDAY presented 83 brand new 33-seater buses to the leadership of the Ghana
\nPrivate Road and Transport Union (GPRTU).<\/p>\n

This was
\nunder the Micro Finance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) scheme intended to
\nsupport Ghanaians. The GPRTU is expected to pay back the cost of the buses in
\ninstalments.<\/p>\n

The buses
\nwere procured in 2016 under the previous Mahama NDC administration at
\noutrageous prices, raising suspicion and issues of corruption.<\/p>\n

This compelled
\nthe Akufo-Addo administration to reduce the cost by 53.5 % to enable their
\npurchase by the GPRTU.<\/p>\n

Chief of
\nStaff, Akosua Frema Osei Opare, who performed the handover ceremony, said upon
\nassumption of office, government realised the price of the buses were too
\nexorbitant.<\/p>\n

She said
\nthat was because later investigations revealed that the price of the buses in
\nLondon was found to be far higher than that of the retail market prices at the
\nlocal outlet of the same supplier. However, an initial price renegotiation with
\nthe supplier yielded only a one per cent reduction.<\/p>\n

She said
\nthat made it virtually impossible for GPRTU to acquire the vehicles for
\ncommercial transport operations on an economically viable basis, which compelled
\ngovernment to intervene and subsidize the price by 53.5 %.<\/p>\n

She
\nexplained that from the initial price of GH\u00a2705,550, it had been reduced to GH\u00a2328,000.<\/p>\n

On his part,
\nChief Executive Officer (CEO), Steve Amoah, said apart from being able to set
\nup offices in over 200 district offices across the nation, the scheme had been able
\nto disburse over GH\u00a260 million, with over 70 per cent going to women.<\/p>\n

Currently, MASLOC\u2019s
\nrecovery rate of the new loan portfolio is about 65%.<\/p>\n

In the not-too-distant
\nfuture, the entire MASLOC operations will be automated nationwide with
\nintegrated ICT system \u2013 about 85% completed. <\/p>\n

Its
\nturnaround time has been reduced to about three weeks while interest rate has
\nbeen reduced by 50% from 24% per annum to 12% annum.<\/p>\n

Under the
\ncurrent circumstance, Steve Amoah said an amount of GH\u00a220,000 can be borrowed from MASLOC without
\ncollateral, representing a 100% increase from the previous arrangement.<\/p>\n

Chairman of the GPRTU Kwame Kuma, who took delivery of keys to the buses, thanked government for its effort.<\/p>\n
