The Parliament of Ghana<\/strong><\/p>\n

The
\nMinister of Trade and Industry, Alan Kyerematen, appeared in Parliament on
\nThursday to brief parliamentarians on the right given to Ghana to host the Secretariat
\nof the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) which was received with
\nhuge applause from both sides of the House.<\/p>\n

Members
\nof Parliament (MPs) from the Minority National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Majority
\nNew Patriotic Party (NPP) were unanimous in praising the President, Nana Ado
\nDankwa Akufo-Addo, and the Minister of Trade for working so hard to get the Secretariat
\nsited in Ghana, which they said would bring huge economic gains to the nation.<\/p>\n

The
\nMinority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, was particularly appreciative of the efforts of
\nthe Minister of Trade, whom he described as a man with wide international
\nacceptability within the trade area.<\/p>\n

He
\nsaid with the hosting of the Secretariat, Ghana must be careful and strengthen
\nits local trade laws to protect local industries.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0 NDC MP for North Tongu and ranking member of
\nthe Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the
\nAfCFTA was the beginning of making Africa more powerful economically and would
\ndefinitely improve the economies of the various African countries who had
\nsigned on to the agreement.<\/p>\n

For
\nhis part, the Minister of Trade said seven countries including Ghana bid for
\nthe hosting of the Secretariat but three nations withdrew their bids and threw
\ntheir weight behind Ghana\u2019s bid.<\/p>\n

The
\nsix other nations were Ethiopia, Kenya, Senegal, Egypt, Madagascar and Eswatini,
\nbut Senegal, Ethiopia and Egypt withdrew and supported Ghana\u2019s bid.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr
\nSpeaker, Ghana should leverage the opportunity of hosting the AfCFTA
\nSecretariat to become the new commercial capital of Africa, a regional trade
\nhub and economic epic-centre and the new gateway to the continent,\u201d the
\nminister said, stressing that a national AfCFTA coordinating office is being established at the Ministry of Trade to act as a
\none-stop facilitation centre and information hub which would be staffed and
\noperated in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of
