AU Members<\/strong><\/p>\n

President
\nNana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has pledged $10 million to facilitate the
\nestablishment of African Continental Free Trade (AfCFTA) Secretariat in Ghana.<\/p>\n

The
\nPresident, at an Extraordinary Summit of the Assembly of Heads of State and
\nGovernment of the African Union (AU) in Niamey, Niger, yesterday said Ghana was
\nhonoured to host the Secretariat.<\/p>\n

\u201cGhana is
\nready to donate US$10 million to the African Union to support the
\noperationalisation of the Secretariat. I have set up an inter-ministerial
\ncommittee of my government to work with the AU Commission towards this end,\u201d he
\nindicated.<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cIt is a privilege that, for the first time in our nation\u2019s history,
\nwe have the responsibility of hosting an important pan-African institution.\u201d <\/p>\n

He expressed
\nhis gratitude to President Macky Sall of Senegal for stepping down Senegal\u2019s
\ncandidature in favour of Ghana, and also showed his appreciation to the leaders
\nof Egypt and Ethiopia, their Excellencies Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Abiy Ahmed
\nrespectively, for similar gestures of solidarity. <\/p>\n

While
\napplauding member states that have deposited their instruments of ratification
\nat the AU Commission Headquarters in Addis Ababa, the President expressed
\ndelight in the decision taken by Nigeria to sign up to the Agreement, stressing
\nthat \u201cthe adhesion of Nigeria to the Free Trade Area has enhanced considerably
\nits prospects of success\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe have,
\ntoday, taken very important steps towards working with a common voice and a
\ncommon purpose to exploit the abundant wealth and resources of our great
\ncontinent for the benefit of all our people. Indeed, the \u2018Africa We Want\u2019 is
\nachievable,\u201d the President said. <\/p>\n

President
\nAkufo-Addo assured his colleague Heads of State that Ghana would put all the
\nrequisite facilities at the disposal of the Secretariat, so that it can run as
\na world-class organisation. <\/p>\n

In addition,
\nand pursuant to the Statutes of the AU Commission, he indicated that the Secretariat
\nshall enjoy the privileges and immunities stipulated in the OAU General
\nConvention on Privileges and Immunities, the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic
\nPrivileges and Immunities, and the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties and
\nthe Vienna Convention between States and International Organisations or between
\nInternational Organisations. <\/p>\n

The
\nPresident urged the Assembly to direct the AU Commission to prepare and execute
\na host-country agreement in accordance with the Executive Council Decision
\nEX.CL\/195 (VII) Rev.1 of July 2005 on hosting AU Organs; and hold consultations
\nwith Ghana and key stakeholders to prepare the statutes of the AfCFTA
\nSecretariat with a view towards providing a report for the consideration of the
\nCouncil of Ministers of Trade. <\/p>\n

President
\nAkufo-Addo also called on pan-African institutions such as the UN Economic
\nCommission for Africa, the African Development Bank, the African Export-Import
\nBank and other key stakeholders, including friends of Africa, to provide such
\nsupport as they can towards the establishment of the Secretariat. <\/p>\n

\u201cI am
\ndetermined to do whatever I can to guarantee the smooth take-off of the
\nSecretariat, and help make sure that it turns out to be a world-class
\ninstitution, which will become the pride and joy of all Africans,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

President Akufo-Addo added, \u201cWe owe it to generations unborn to ensure that the biggest trading bloc on the globe, whose outcomes would be rewarding to all, and which would assist in attaining the \u201cAfrica We Want\u201d, does not falter.\u201d<\/p>\n
