GOVERNMENT
\nHAS secured a $200 million facility from the World Bank to help transform and
\ndiversify the economy through the promotion of private investment in the real
\nsectors.<\/p>\n

The facility,
\nwhich is aimed at implementing an integrated programme, will help boost the
\ncountry\u2019s competitiveness and deliver sustainable jobs under the Ghana Economic
\nTransformation Project (GETP).<\/p>\n

The $200
\nmillion funded projects from the International Development Association (IDA)
\nwere approved by the World Bank Board of Executive Directors on July 2, 2019.<\/p>\n

The GETP
\nwill support improvements in the business environment and build capacity for
\ninvestment attraction and retention as well as spatial development such as
\nSpecial Economic Zones (SEZs) to address constraints to access industrial land.<\/p>\n

The project
\nwill also support entrepreneurship and SME growth by strengthening the
\nentrepreneurship support ecosystem, and it will include early-stage financing
\nfor growth-oriented entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n

Pierre
\nLaporte, World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone, said:
\n\u201cThis operation directly aligns with government\u2019s strategy and with the World
\nBank\u2019s Africa regional strategy, which lays out economic transformation as a
\nmechanism to create sustainable and inclusive growth.\u201d<\/p>\n

The GETP
\nwill support government\u2019s strategy of transforming the Ghanaian economy to
\nachieve inclusive and sustainable growth, with the private sector as the main
\ndriver to build the most business-friendly economy in Africa and foster the
\ncompetitiveness of Ghanaian firms.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis
\nproject applies the World Bank Group Maximizing Finance for Development
\napproach, maximizing the Government of Ghana\u2019s resources and will help ensure
\nthat IDA funding leverages and attracts complementary private financing,\u201d said
\nDouglas Pearce, Practice Manager Finance Competitiveness and Innovation Global
\nPractice.<\/p>\n

The
\ninterventions under the project are complementary to the initiatives of other
\ndevelopment partners focusing on the investment climate, skills development,
\nindustrial parks, access to finance, agricultural value chains and climate
\ninnovation. The interventions under this project will contribute to the World
\nBank Group\u2019s twin goals by supporting opportunities for business growth and job
\ncreation in non-resource-based sectors.<\/p>\n
