The Minister for <\/strong>Business Development, Mohammed Awal, has expressed worry over the low participation of women in the country\u2019s private business sector.<\/p>\n

According to the minister, Ghana cannot
\nbuild a prosperous economy without a shift in the trend where majority of
\nbusiness owners and members of executive boards of businesses continue to be
\nmen.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I look at the membership in
\nthis building, less than 10 per cent are women. We cannot build a prosperous
\neconomy without inclusiveness and I want you to deliberately help women
\nsucceed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr. Awal was speaking at a Chief
\nExecutive Officers (CEOs) breakfast meeting to commemorate the centenary
\ncelebration of the Ghana International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Accra.<\/p>\n

Addressing the ICC members and guests at the
\nevent themed: \u201cCreating an enabling environment for business to work for
\neveryone, everyday and everywhere in Ghana\u201d, he said less than 30 per cent of
\nwomen are on boards and executive positions in the country, a situation he
\nindicated does not auger well for business. <\/p>\n

\u201cYou cannot develop this country
\nwithout a deliberate support to women businesses. Sixty-two per cent of all new
\nbusinesses in this country for the past 50 years are being funded by women \u2013 38
\nper cent of that are women less than 35 years,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\u201cI want to urge ICC to have
\npolicies and programmes to develop the capacity of our women to do business if
\nwe want to grow Ghana beyond where we are,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

The sector minister further
\ncalled on the ICC to use its experience
\nand leverage to support already established businesses in the country to go
\nbeyond its first generation.<\/p>\n

He said research shows that 75
\nper cent of businesses in Ghana do not go beyond the founders, with only about
\n15 to 20 per cent going beyond the founders. <\/p>\n

His Lordship, Justice Date-Bah, Chairman of the Drafting Committee of Experts of the Company\u2019s Act 2019, took participants through the new Company\u2019s Act and its implications for businesses in the country.<\/p>\n
