About 2000 Ghanaian women entrepreneurs have been given the opportunity to benefit from a skills development and support programme following the launch of the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) in Ghana.<\/p>\n

The initiative by the U.S.
\nState Department\u2019s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs (ECA) is designed
\nto empower Ghanaian women entrepreneurs to fulfill their economic potential,
\nand in doing so create conditions for stability, security and prosperity for
\nall.<\/p>\n

Through the Young African
\nLeaders Initiative (YALI) Regional Leadership Centre in Accra, the AWE would
\npromote collective economic prosperity and stability by creating a holistic and
\ninclusive learning community to advance the development of women with brilliant
\nideas into successful entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n

Officially launching the
\npilot programme at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration
\n(GIMPA), Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, Marie
\nRoyce, said the programme would provide a new educational opportunity for
\naspiring female entrepreneurs.\u00a0 <\/p>\n

\u201cAWE is part of the White
\nHouse\u2019s Women\u2019s Global Development and Prosperity Initiative which seeks to
\nreach 50 million women by 2025.\u00a0 Ghana is
\none of 10 African countries piloting AWE this year,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She said societies that
\nempower women in civic and economic life are more prosperous and more peaceful,
\nadding that although Africa has only 5 per cent of its CEOs being women, their
\npositive impact on leadership is clear.<\/p>\n

\u201cBusinesses in Africa with
\nwomen on their boards often have operation profit of over 20 per cent more than
\nthe industry average,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Madam Royce, therefore,
\nnoted that last year the ECA spent $25 million to reach 150,000 women across
\nthe globe with specific programmes to empower women and girls.<\/p>\n

Ms. Shola Safo-Doudu,
\nProject Lead AWE Ghana, in her remarks, encouraged women to apply for the
\nprogramme in order to gain access to online materials which teache women to
\ncreate their own business plans, understand how to raise capital, and connect
\nwith networks of successful business owners. <\/p>\n

\u201cThrough a combination of
\nfacilitated online and in-person learning sessions, AWE participants will
\nfurther their business skills, network with mentors, and be guided to put their
\nbusiness ideas into practice,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
