\n<\/figure>\nThe Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU) is asking the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) to be bold to approve higher tariffs that would help sustain companies within the country\u2019s power distribution chain.<\/p>\n
PUWU\u2019s call comes after PURC recently approved an 11.17 percent and eight percent tariff increases in electricity and water respectively.<\/p>\n
Although this has been met with some opposition from consumers and industry players, PUWU says\u00a0the increment is not enough to save utility providers from their current struggles.<\/p>\n
General Secretary of the union,\u00a0Michael Adumata Nyantakyi told Citi News, <\/strong>their expectations for a rise in utility tariffs have not been met and are therefore demanding for an upward adjustment.<\/p>\n\n\u201cPURC is just dancing around the problem and is not really tackling the issue. As workers, we are also consumers and affected by these increases.\u00a0 But the reality is that, we are looking at how these companies will be able to operate in a manner that will help us make the needed impact. We are making sure that from the political angle, we don\u2019t create a hullabaloo. In fact, the representations that were made both by GWCL and PDS are not the kind of tariffs that have been approved.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
The increments<\/strong><\/p>\nPURC on Monday approved an 8.01 per cent increment in water tariff<\/strong>, effective July 2019.<\/p>\nExecutive Secretary of the Commission, Maame Dufie Ofori, highlighted the factors that have necessitated an increment in these tariffs including the dollar to cedi rate, projected inflation rate and increasing electricity and water demands.<\/p>\n
Electricity cost and cost of the chemicals for water treatment were also cited as reasons for the tariff increase.<\/p>\n
The PURC approved the increase after considering proposals from the Volta River Authority (VRA), the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Power Distribution Services (PDS) Ghana Limited, the Northern Distribution Company (NEDCo) and Enclave Power Company Limited (EPC).<\/p>\n
In the case of the 11.17 percent increase in electricity tariffs<\/strong> also effective July 1, 2019,\u00a0PURC said the key objective of the tariff review \u201cwas to sustain the financial viability of utility service providers as well as ensuring the delivery of quality services to consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n\u201cThis 2019-2020 major Tariff Review Decision is the outcome of prudent cost review and effective monitoring undertaken by the commission.\u201d<\/p>\n
