Two Nigerian writers, Lesley Arimah and Tochukwu Okafor have been shortlisted for the 2019 Caine Prize for African Writing.<\/p>\n

The shortlisted persons were announced on May 20 and the competition is to feature stories that tackle \u201cthe ordinary in an extraordinary manner\u201d.<\/p>\n

It will also feature the celebration of the diversity of the African short-story writing tradition for the twentieth edition of the prize.<\/p>\n

The five-writer shortlist include authors from Cameroon, Ethiopia, Kenya and Nigeria.<\/p>\n

Dr Peter Kimani, Chair of judges and Kenyan author of the award-winning novel \u2018Dance of the Jakaranda\u2019 announced the writers of the year.<\/p>\n

The shortlisted writers for the 2019 Caine Prize are:<\/p>\n

Lesley Nneka Arimah (Nigeria) for \u2018Skinned\u2019, published in McSweeney\u2019s Quarterly Concern, Issue 53 (2018).<\/p>\n

Meron Hadero (Ethiopia) for \u2018The Wall\u2019, published in McSweeney\u2019s Quarterly Concern, Issue 52 (2018); Cherrie Kandie (Kenya) for \u2018Sew My Mouth\u2019, published in ID Identity: New Short Fiction From Africa (2018).<\/p>\n

Ngwah-Mbo Nana Nkweti (Cameroon) for \u2018It Takes A Village Some Say\u2019, published in The Baffler (2017).<\/p>\n

Tochukwu Emmanuel Okafor (Nigeria) for \u2018All Our Lives\u2019, published in ID Identity: New Short Fiction from Africa (2018).<\/p>\n

According to the organiser, there will be a cash prize of \u00a310,000 for the winning author and a travel award for each of the short-listed candidates.<\/p>\n

The shortlisted candidates will also receive a prize of \u00a3500 and the winner will be invited to go to three literature festivals in Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria.<\/p>\n

The shortlisted stories will be printed by New Internationalist in a special publication to mark the twentieth Caine Prize award dinner.<\/p>\n

It will be achieved through co-publishers in 16 African countries that have received a print-ready PDF free of charge.<\/p>\n
