Two Nigerian authors, Oyinkan Braithwaite and Diana Evans, have made the 2019 Women\u2019s Prize for Fiction final shortlist.<\/p>\n

The Women\u2019s Prize for Fiction, previously known as the Orange Prize for Fiction and the Baileys Women\u2019s Prize for Fiction, is one of the most prestigious literature awards in the world.<\/p>\n

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that in March, Braithwaite and Evans made the long-list alongside Akwaeke Emezi who, unfortunately, was not shortlisted.<\/p>\n

This is the first time that two African authors will be shortlisted the same year. Braithwaite was nominated for her book \u2018My Sister, The Serial Killer\u2019 and Evans for \u2018Ordinary People\u2019.<\/p>\n

Other shortlisted authors include Pat Barker for \u2018The Silence of the Girls\u2019, Anna Burns for \u2018Milkman\u2019, Tayari Jones for \u2018An American Marriage\u2019 and Madeline Miller for \u2018Circe\u2019.<\/p>\n

The prestigious prize has honoured many great authors since it was launched in 1996, including Chimamanda Adichie, who won in 2007 for \u2018Half of a Yellow Sun\u2019.<\/p>\n

This is a significant career boost and it comes with a \u00a330,000 ($40,000) prize.<\/p>\n

It was created after the Bookers Prize of 1991 where none of the six shortlisted books was by a woman, despite 60 per cent of novels that year being published by female authors.<\/p>\n

Chaired by Prof. Kate Williams, the 2019 judging panel includes journalists Dolly Alderton and Arifa Akbar, anti-FGM activist Leyla Hussein.<\/p>\n

Sarah Wood (OBE), the chair and co-founder of the global video advertising marketplace, Unruly, was also on the panel.<\/p>\n
