A pregnant woman was killed in the Sudanese capital after a firefight broke out between members of the country\u2019s security forces.<\/p>\n

The Sudan Doctors Committee (SDC) said in a statement on Wednesday the woman, a street vendor, was killed outside the army headquarters by \u201cstray bullets\u201d when soldiers attempted to disperse the sit-in.<\/p>\n

The incident coincided with the second and final day of a two-day general strike launched at the behest of the Sudanese Professionals Associated (SPA), an umbrella group of various trade unions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Rapid Support Forces and the military seem to have had some sort of argument, which led to a shootout between the two sides and in which a pregnant woman got shot,\u201d said Al Jazeera\u2019s Hiba Morgan, reporting from Khartoum.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere were several injuries also reported by the SPA, the body which has spearheading calls for protests over the past few months in Sudan.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Held to account\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a statement, SPA condemned what it described as \u201cthe irresponsible behaviour of the Sudanese security forces, who are supposed to preserve citizens\u2019 security and safety\u201d.<\/p>\n

It went on to demand that those responsible for the woman\u2019s death \u201cbe held to account for their actions\u201d.<\/p>\n

The nationwide strike is aimed at pressuring members of the ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC) to make way for a civilian-led interim government.<\/p>\n

Sudan\u2019s military removed former long ruling leader Omar al-Bashir on April 11 following months of anti-government protests, which first erupted in December over soaring prices, cash shortages and other economic hardships.<\/p>\n

It set up the TMC to rule the country and promised to hand over power after elections.<\/p>\n

Despite reaching an agreement on some important aspects of the transition \u2013 including a three-year timeframe and the creation of a 300-member parliament \u2013 the sovereign council\u2019s composition remains the main point of contention.<\/p>\n

\u201cAware of our historical responsibility, we will work toward reaching an urgent agreement \u2026 that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people and the goals of the glorious December revolution,\u201d said a statement signed by the TMC.<\/p>\n
