Award winning rapper Kanye West has bared details on his struggles with bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n
West, who has been campaigning against the stigmatisation of people with mental health issues, opened up in the new season of David Letterman\u2019s Netflix show, \u201cMy Next Guest Needs No Introduction.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a clip of the episode, which is set to drop Friday, Letterman asks West, \u201cWhat is the mechanism that is malfunctioning or is taking a break in your brain, do you know?\u201d<\/p>\n
West replied, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t be able to explain that as much just because, you know, I\u2019m not a doctor.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can just tell you what I\u2019m feeling at the time, and I feel a heightened connection with the universe when I\u2019m ramping up. It is a health issue.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis \u2014 it\u2019s like a sprained brain, like having a sprained ankle. And if someone has a sprained ankle, you\u2019re not going to push on him more.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith us, once our brain gets to a point of spraining, people do everything to make it worse.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou have this moment [where] you feel everyone wants to kill you. You pretty much don\u2019t trust anyone.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you\u2019re in this state, you\u2019re hyper-paranoid about everything, everyone. This is my experience, other people have different experiences.<\/p>\n
\u201cEveryone now is an actor. Everything\u2019s a conspiracy. You feel the government is putting chips in your head. You feel you\u2019re being recorded. You feel all these things,\u201d West said.<\/p>\n
West recounted being diagnosed with bipolar disorder two years ago and described his experience with an involuntary psychiatric hold in 2016.<\/p>\n
Further explaining his experience, he said, \u201cThey have this moment where they put you, they handcuff you, they drug you, they put you on the bed, and they separate you from everyone you know.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s something that I am so happy that I experienced myself so I can start by changing that moment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
West first shared his bipolar disorder diagnosis in 2018 on his album, \u2018Ye\u2019. He referenced taking medication to treat his condition in his conversation with Letterman.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you don\u2019t take medication every day to keep you at a certain state, you have a potential to ramp up and it can take you to a point where you can even end up in the hospital.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd you start acting erratic, as TMZ would put it,\u201d he said in reference to his impromptu visit to the celebrity gossip website\u2019s headquarters, which sparked headlines.<\/p>\n
West told Letterman he\u2019s choosing to speak about his diagnosis because of a \u201cstrong stigma\u201d around mental health.
\u201cPeople are allowed to say anything about it and discriminate in any way,\u201d West said.<\/p>\n
He said he is under a doctor\u2019s care, that he uses alternative treatment methods, but he thinks medication may work with others with bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n
Fans had speculations about his condition for years, particularly after he was hospitalized for a \u201cpsychiatric emergency\u201d in November 2016 just after canceling his Saint Pablo tour.<\/p>\n
West seemingly confirmed that he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2018 with the release of \u2018Ye\u2019.<\/p>\n
In April, his wife Kim Kardashian West also confirmed his diagnosis in an interview with Vogue, saying the couple had reached a \u201cpretty good place\u201dwith his mental health.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is an emotional process, for sure,\u201d the 38-year-old reality mogul told Vogue. \u201cRight now everything is really calm.
\u201cBut we can definitely feel episodes coming, and we know how to handle them.\u201d<\/p>\n
The rapper took steps towards normalizing mental health issues with the release of his latest album cover which read, \u201cI Hate Being Bipolar. It\u2019s Awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n
