The mayors of London and New York on Monday slammed U.S. President Donald Trump, joining a Twitter spat after he opened a visit to Britain by calling them \u201cdumb and incompetent.\u201d<\/p>\n

London Mayor Sadiq Khan\u2019s office rejected Trump\u2019s \u201cchildish insults,\u201d after the U.S. leader called him a \u201closer\u201d and told U.S. media that Khan was \u201cthe twin of [New York City mayor Bill] de Blasio except shorter.\u201d<\/p>\n

De Blasio, who reportedly stands 1.96 metres tall, tweeted that \u201cTrump is Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s twin, only his presidency will be shorter.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

He is campaigning for the Democratic nomination in the 2020 U.S. presidential election, potentially pitting him against Trump.<\/p>\n

Tweeting around the time of touchdown at London\u2019s Stansted Airport, Trump, who has had previous Twitter feuds with Khan, called him \u201ca stone cold loser who should focus on crime in London, not me.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cKhan reminds me very much of our very dumb and incompetent mayor of NYC de Blasio, who has also done a terrible job, only half his height,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour values and what you stand for are the complete opposite of London\u2019s values and the values in this country,\u201d Khan, a member of Britain\u2019s main opposition Labour party, said in a later video message to Trump posted on the website of the Elle UK magazine.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe think diversity\u2019s not a weakness; diversity is a strength,\u201d said Khan, who held a placard with the slogan \u201cOnly weak men fear strong women.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cWe respect women and we think they are equal to men,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Responding to Trump\u2019s tweets, Labour lawmaker David Lammy, one of Britain\u2019s most prominent black politicians, wrote: \u201cWonder why you have a problem with London\u2019s first ever Muslim mayor?<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a president who insulted London\u2019s mayor after a terror attack,\u2019\u2019 Lammy tweeted.<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Theresa May defended Khan after Trump accused him of a \u201cpathetic\u201d response to the London Bridge terrorist attack in June 2017, which left 11 dead and dozens injured.<\/p>\n

Khan gave several interviews to British media ahead of Trump\u2019s arrival, writing in Sunday\u2019s Observer newspaper that it was \u201cun-British to roll out the red carpet\u201d for him.<\/p>\n

He urged May, who is scheduled to hold talks with Trump on Tuesday, to \u201cissue a powerful rejection, not of the U.S. as a country or the office of the presidency, but of Trump and the far-right agenda he embodies.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Labour\u2019s left-wing leader Jeremy Corbyn said he would not attend a state banquet for Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government should not be rolling out the red carpet for a president who rips up vital international treaties, backs climate change denial and uses racist and misogynist rhetoric.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cTomorrow\u2019s protest against Donald Trump\u2019s state visit is an opportunity to stand in solidarity with those he\u2019s attacked in America, around the world and in our own country, including, just this morning, @SadiqKhan,\u2019\u2019 Corbyn tweeted.<\/p>\n

Tens of thousands of protesters are expected to join a \u201cTogether against Trump\u2019\u2019 march through central London on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
