{"id":623705,"date":"2019-05-23T08:58:08","date_gmt":"2019-05-23T08:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"<br><div>\n<figure class=\"fff post-thumbnail\" itemprop=\"associatedMedia\" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img class=\"post_layout_5_img\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ghana-mma.com\/2019\/05\/Nana-Addo-2-e1558595485216.jpg\" alt=\"Banking sector reform "},"modified":"2019-05-23T08:58:08","modified_gmt":"2019-05-23T08:58:08","slug":"banking-sector-reform-yielding-positive-results-nana-addo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2019\/05\/23\/banking-sector-reform-yielding-positive-results-nana-addo\/","title":{"rendered":"Banking sector reform yielding positive results \u2013 Nana Addo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"fff post-thumbnail\" itemprop=\"associatedMedia\" itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"http:\/\/schema.org\/ImageObject\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"post_layout_5_img\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ghanamma.com\/2019\/05\/Nana-Addo-2-e1558595485216.jpg\" alt=\"Banking sector reform yielding positive results \u2013 Nana Addo\"\/><\/figure>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">President Nana Akufo-Addo has said the measures taken by his administration and the Bank of Ghana to sanitise the banking sector are beginning to yield positive results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Speaking at the formal opening of the new head office building of the Bank of Ghana, on Wednesday, President Akufo-Addo stated that \u201cat the end of the first quarter of 2019, the banking industry performance in total assets, total deposits and net loans and advances, all saw positive growth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">According to the March 2019 Banking Sector Report of the Bank of Ghana, \u201can assessment of the banking sector\u2019s performance during the first two months of 2019 showed a well-capitalized, profitable, liquid and stable sector with strong prospects for increased financial intermediation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/i3DLTTh2utA\" width=\"697\" height=\"392\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/><span lang=\"EN-US\">From the above, the President stated that \u201cit is evident that the measures we took saved the banking industry from a very dire situation, characterised by the existence of several weakly capitalized banks, with balance sheets encumbered by a multitude of low performing loans, pursuing bad business models with poor governance practices, and, largely, non-existent central bank regulation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">These measures, he stressed, saved not only the deposits of some 1.5 million Ghanaians, their businesses and the people they employed, but also minimised job losses in the banking sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Describing the new head office building as an impressive piece of architecture, President Akufo-Addo thanked the bank for being an integral part of Ghana\u2019s economic story over the last three decades, and has proven itself to be a solid bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">Government, the President said, will continue to work and build a durable financial sector, with Ghanaian banks, hopefully, leading the charge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWe will work with financial institutions and regulators to promote digital finance and mobile money usage, and, thereby, formalise the Ghanaian economy,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">President Akufo-Addo continued, \u201cAlready, mobile money penetration in Ghana is the second highest in Africa, and, with reforms to our payment system, we anticipate that Ghana will have a strong competitive edge in the region for financial innovation and access to credit. We are also working hard to reduce interest rates, and our efforts have yielded some modest successes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/scFtLc55oSg\" width=\"697\" height=\"392\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/><span lang=\"EN-US\">The President assured that the government he leads will continue to encourage domestic champions to grow, and take significant positions in key sectors of the economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cA careful glance of the success of CalBank fortifies my belief that, with hard work, ingenuity, innovation and creativity, we can realise the vision of a Ghana Beyond Aid,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">As Co-Chair of the United Nations Secretary General\u2019s Group of Eminent Advocates on the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), President Akufo-Addo was gratified by CalBank\u2019s decision to use clean, affordable energy from the 500 Kilo Watt solar plant installed in their facility, in realization of Goal No. 7 of the SDGs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cAgain, in my capacity as the African Union Gender Champion, I am glad to learn that there are more women than men in management positions at the Bank, also in fulfilment of Goal No. 5 of the SGDs.
