Japan\u2019s Emperor Akihito has declared his abdication in a historic ceremony at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.<\/p>\n

In his last public address as emperor, Akihito handed over the symbols of power and thanked the public for their support during his 30-year reign.<\/p>\n

The 85-year-old was given permission to abdicate after saying he felt unable to fulfil his role because of his age and declining health.<\/p>\n

He is the first Japanese monarch to stand down in more than 200 years.<\/p>\n

Akihito will technically remain emperor until midnight.<\/p>\n

His eldest son, Crown Prince Naruhito, will ascend the throne later on Wednesday. A new era \u2013 called Reiwa, meaning order and harmony \u2013 will begin in Japan\u2019s unique calendar.<\/p>\n

While the emperor holds no political power, he serves as a national figurehead.<\/p>\n

Akihito has endeared himself to many Japanese people during his reign as he has interacted with those suffering from disease and disaster.<\/p>\n

What happened at the abdication ceremony?<\/h2>\n

In the morning, the emperor took part in a Shinto ceremony to report his plans to the mythological ancestors of Japan\u2019s imperial family.<\/p>\n

The main \u201cCeremony of the Abdication\u201d took place in a state room of the Imperial Palace in front of about 300 people including Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Crown Prince Naruhito, and Crown Princess Masako.<\/p>\n

Imperial chamberlains carried the state and privy seals into the hall, along with a sacred sword and a jewel which are considered symbols of the imperial family.<\/p>\n

In a short ceremony, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe addressed the emperor, saying: \u201cWhile keeping in our hearts the path that the emperor has walked, we will make utmost efforts to create a bright future for a proud Japan that is full of peace and hope.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then in his final speech Akihito, wearing a Western-style morning coat, said he \u201cwished Japan and the world peace and prosperity\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am deeply grateful for the people that accepted me as a symbol and supported me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI sincerely wish, together with the Empress, that the Reiwa era which begins tomorrow will be a stable and fruitful one,\u201d he added. \u201cI pray, with all my heart, for peace and happiness for all the people in Japan and around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

    After helping his wife, Empress Michiko, down the steps of the ceremonial platform, the emperor bowed towards the gathered officials then left the room.<\/p>\n

    Why did the emperor decide to abdicate?<\/h2>\n

    The 85-year-old had surgery for prostate cancer in 2003 and a heart bypass operation in 2012.<\/p>\n

    In a rare speech in 2016, he said that he feared his age would make it hard for him to carry out his duties and strongly hinted that he wanted to stand down.<\/p>\n

    Opinion polls showed that the vast majority of Japan sympathised with the emperor and a year later parliament enacted a law that made his abdication possible.<\/p>\n

    Who is the incoming emperor?<\/h2>\n

    Prince Naruhito will become Japan\u2019s 126th emperor \u2013 and will officially lead the country into the new Reiwa era. It will mark the end of the current Heisei era, which began when Akihito ascended the throne in 1989.<\/p>\n

    The 59-year-old Oxford University graduate is married to Crown Princess Masako. Their only child, Princess Aiko, was born in 2001.<\/p>\n

    Japan\u2019s current law prohibits women from inheriting the throne so Princess Aiko\u2019s uncle Prince Fumihito is now first in line, followed by her cousin, 12-year-old Prince Hisahito.<\/p>\n

    Why is the Japanese monarchy important?<\/h2>\n

    It\u2019s the oldest continuing hereditary monarchy in the world. Legends date it back to about 600 BC.<\/p>\n

    The emperors used to be seen as gods, but Hirohito \u2013 the father of Akihito \u2013 publicly renounced his divinity as part of Japan\u2019s surrender at the end of World War Two.<\/p>\n

    It was Emperor Akihito who helped repair Japan\u2019s post-war reputation.<\/p>\n

    Previous emperors rarely interacted with the public, but Akihito redefined the role \u2013 and has come to be known for his compassion.<\/p>\n

    In 1991, two years after he ascended the throne, Akihito and the empress broke with norms and knelt down to speak to people affected by a volcanic eruption in Nagasaki.<\/p>\n

    Akihito also took up the role of a diplomat, becoming an unofficial ambassador for Japan and travelling abroad extensively.<\/p>\n

    While Tuesday sees the first abdication in 200 years, it wasn\u2019t so rare historically.<\/p>\n

    According to Japan\u2019s state broadcaster NHK, about half the country\u2019s emperors or empresses have done the same, and it happened frequently from the 8th Century to the 19th Century.<\/p>\n
